history

The head office in Dortmund, near the Westfalenpark

The two groups of origin of the group have been closely associated with the economic middle class from the craft, trade and industry since their formation at the beginning of the 20th century. The Iduna Nova went back to an initiative of independent craftsmen and tradespeople who founded a health and death fund in Hamburg in 1906 . Dortmund master craftsmen followed this example a year later and also set up a health benefit fund. When it was founded, the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce (now Hamburg Chamber of Crafts ) played a special role and has had a say and supervisory right since it was founded. Particularly noteworthy are two Hamburg master craftsmen, the building contractor and master stonemason Johann Reimer (1847–1917) and the master wood turner and later Hamburg Senator Johannes Hirsch (1861–1935). The Imperial Supervisory Office in Berlin demanded 100,000 marks for the founding fund. 14 Hamburg banks brought half together and the other half was brought together by master craftsman Johann Reimer from Hamburg's Karolinenviertel. From 1914 to 1934, Johannes Hirsch was chairman of the supervisory board of “Mittelstandsversicherung”.

The different types of company as an insurance association or stock corporation have business and tax reasons. The stock corporations are not listed on the stock exchange.

The Signal Iduna Group is now open to all sections of the population. The traditionally close connections to the organizations from the craft, trade and industry continue to exist.
