history

Beginnings and War Years

The “Association of Catholic Economic Pastors of Bavaria” as the predecessor of LIGA Bank was founded on February 15, 1917 in Regensburg by 34 Catholic priests as a cooperative bank. The church members came from six Bavarian dioceses. Prelate Anton Götz is considered the “father” of this bank . Initially, the parishes in the Bavarian province mostly had to finance themselves. It was therefore common practice to borrow money from relatives, wealthy families within the newly created parishes, or private loan intermediaries. This practice enabled the pastors to become dependent on people or institutions outside the church. That is why the pastors founded the “Association of Catholic Economic Pastors in Bavaria”, today's LIGA Bank.

The aim was to secure the means for the economic independence of the economic pastors through cooperative self-help . At the first general assembly in July 1917 it became clear that the restriction to “economic pastors” was not sufficient. The later chairman of the board, Prelate Anton Götz, therefore initiated an expansion and re-establishment of the association. This took place on October 27, 1919 as the "Economic Association of Catholic Clergy of Bavaria" . In 1922 and 1923 branches were opened in Munich , Würzburg and Augsburg . In September 1924, the ordinary general assembly decided to change its name: the association was immediately prefixed with the name “LIGA”. The name goes back to the clergy organizations in Spain and Italy. This "LIGA" was not only seen as a union, but also as an expression of solidarity and community within the church. In 1925 the bank already had 3,244 members. “Financial irregularities” in 1926 and 1927 led the company to the verge of bankruptcy. The Bavarian clergy helped the bank and internal changes made it possible to reorganize in a relatively short time. LIGA was one of the very few institutions that was able to keep its counters open during the banking crisis in the 1930s. She didn't have to put a credit lock on. From 1933 the situation for church banks in Germany became more difficult: the chairman of the board, clerical councilor Johann Hösl, was temporarily taken into protective custody, and director Franz Stadtler, Munich branch, was in custody for a long time. In 1943 the LIGA was about to be dissolved by the Nazi regime. However, a delaying tactic was used to delay this until the end of the war, which prevented the bank from liquidating. However, the Würzburg branch was forcibly closed on May 31, 1943.

Post-war and present

The post-war period was initially characterized by the reconstruction of the bombed-out branches. On November 2, 1946, the Würzburg branch, which was forcibly closed in 1943, was reopened. LIGA Bank has been and is the largest cooperative bank in Bavaria since the early 1950s. New branches were opened in Speyer (1965) and Nuremberg (1970) and in the early 1980s in Bamberg , Eichstätt and Passau . Since then, LIGA Bank has been represented in all dioceses of the Freising Bishops' Conference . In 1982 the new headquarters in Regensburg was moved into. The first in-house LIGA investment funds , which are characterized by a special ethical-sustainable orientation, start in 1989 . With the reunification of Germany, LIGA Bank expanded its business area geographically. Since July 1991 there has been a branch in Dresden for customers from the dioceses of Dresden-Meißen and Görlitz . The bank has also been active in Stuttgart since 1997 and in Freiburg since 2002 . LIGA Asset Management was founded in 2000 and LIGA Bank Foundation in 2002. In 2017 LIGA Bank celebrated its 100th anniversary.

Insurance business

LIGA Bank eG has also been active in the insurance sector with special rates for church employees and the Catholic clergy since the very beginning. The partnership with the Bavarian Insurance Chamber, which still exists today, began in 1937. In order to better meet the increased demand, LIGA-Gassenhuber Versicherungsagentur GmbH was founded on January 1st, 2016.

In the course of time, the following support funds, among others, were affiliated to the economic association:

  • Priest Pension Fund (1922-1935)
  • Welfare fund for parsonage employees (1922–1935)
  • Priester-Krankenkasse (from 1923) operates today as LIGA Krankenversicherung Catholic Priester VVaG
