The RKU - Universitäts- und Rehabilitationskliniken Ulm gGmbH (until 2006: Rehabilitation Hospital Ulm ) are one of three hospitals on the Obere Eselsberg in Ulm (next to the University Hospital Ulm and the Bundeswehr Hospital Ulm ). It is a house of maximum care with a focus on orthopedics and neurology . Together with acute therapy in the clinic, it also combines the subsequent medical and professional rehabilitation under one roof.

The neurological and orthopedic departments of the RKU are also clinics of the Ulm University Hospital and are therefore involved in the practical training of students of human medicine at the Ulm University .

history

The plans for the RKU go back to 1969, when the then rector of Ulm University suggested the establishment of a rehabilitation clinic for accident victims at the Ulm University Hospital . Based on this proposal, a working group consisting of representatives from the city of Ulm , the Heidelberg Rehabilitation Foundation , the University of Ulm , the Baden-Württemberg State Insurance Institute, the employers' liability insurance associations and the Baden-Württemberg State Employment Office was set up.

With the construction of the Ulm Rehabilitation Hospital, on the one hand, the request for an aftercare clinic for the University of Ulm was met and, on the other hand, the acute demand for neurological and orthopedic beds for the University Hospital was met. Clinical operations at the RKU began in 1984.

On 6 December 2006 the name of the hospital by entry in was the commercial register of Ulm from Ulm Rehabilitation Hospital in R KU - University and rehabilitation clinics changed. Today the facility has a neurological and an orthopedic department (with a paraplegic center), an anesthesiological clinic, a center for integrated rehabilitation (ZIR) with its own dormitory area, an X-ray department and a clinical laboratory. With around 12,000 outpatients and 3,500 inpatients and 3,500 operations in four operating theaters , the RKU's orthopedic clinic is one of the largest and most powerful facilities of its kind in Germany. The house is jointly sponsored by Sana Kliniken AG (50%) and Ulm University Hospital (50%); Matthias Gruber has been the managing director since September 1, 2012, and the orthopedic surgeon Heiko Reichel is the chief medical director .

Vocational education

Vocational training at the RKU combines vocational support and vocational rehabilitation, which supports people in entering and re-entering work.

The nursing vocational schools were founded in 2015. Here, health and nursing staff (3 years) and health and nursing assistants (1 year) are trained twice a year.

The vocational training is completed by the RKU Academy, which offers internal and external training and further education and thus strengthens the professional competence of the employees at the RKU.
