The Brunngasshalde is a street in the old town of the city of Bern in Switzerland .

location

The Brunngasshalde begins in the west at the junction with the Grabenpromenade and the Schütteweg, in the immediate vicinity of Kornhausplatz. Then leads eastwards, north along the old town high above the Aare , where it becomes the Postgasshalde at the confluence of Rathausgasse . The Brunngasshalde runs parallel below Brunngasse , to which it is connected by a staircase.

history

After the great city fire of 1405 at the latest, the steep Brunngasshalde served as a convenient and nearby garbage and rubble dump. The path laid out in 1827 has been called Brunngasshalde since 1882, and from 1967 to 1969 it was expanded into a through road. On the Brunngasshalde is the Stettbrunnen , the oldest still preserved fountain in the city of Bern, which gave the Brunngasse its name.

Brunngasshalde 63

From 1642 to the first third of the 19th century, the Bernese salt chamber was located at the location of the double property that today includes Brunngasshalde 63 and Brunngasse 48. In 1834 the maternity hospital was moved here and in 1855 a new building was built at this point as part of the redevelopment of the lower town. This continued to serve as a maternity hospital until a new women's hospital was built on the Grosse Schanze . As a result, the city sold the entire property, which was subsequently used as a rental house. The facades were created in 1874 in the style of mid-century classicism. In 1990 and 1991 the house was carefully renovated and completely modernized, especially in the sanitary area.
