The municipality of Achacachi ( Aymará : Jach'ak'achi ) is a district in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

location

The municipality Achacachi is one of four ( until 2001: two / until 2009: three ) Municipios of the province of Omasuyos and is located in the central part of the province. It is bordered to the northwest by the Municipio Ancoraimes , to the west by Lake Titicaca and the Municipio Santiago de Huata , to the south by Lake Titicaca, to the southwest by the Municipio Huarina , to the east by the province of Los Andes , and to the north to the province of Larecaja .

The municipality has 173 localities ( localidades ), the central place of the municipality is the small town Achacachi with 8,857 inhabitants in the central part of the district. Larger towns in the municipality are Chua Cocani with 907 inhabitants and Warisata with 732 inhabitants ( 2001 ).

The municipality of Achacachi is located on the Bolivian Altiplano on the east bank of Lake Titicaca at an average altitude of 4000  m , between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera Central in the east.

The climate in the Achacachi area is derived from the altitude on the Altiplano and the proximity to the large body of water of Lake Titicaca, which mitigates temperature fluctuations. The annual average temperature is 11 ° C (see climate diagram Achacachi), with the monthly average in the coldest month (July) at 8 ° C only slightly deviating from the warmest month (November to March) at 12 ° C. The climate is arid from June to August with only sporadic rainfall, and it is humid in the summer months, especially from December to March, with monthly rainfall of more than 100 mm. The annual precipitation is around 600 mm.

The population of the Municipio Achacahi has increased by about a third in the past two decades:

  • 1992 : 45,470 inhabitants ( census )
  • 2001 : 54,865 inhabitants (census)
  • 2005 : In July 2005, the southern part of the municipality, the cantons of Huarina and Copancara, was rededicated as an independent municipality of Huarina. In January 2009, the two western cantons of Santiago de Huata and Kalaque became an independent municipality of Santiago de Huata.
  • 2012 : The population for the combined municipality Achacachi / Huarina / Santiago de Huata was 62,418 inhabitants

The municipality of Achacachi had a population density of 66 inhabitants / km² in the last census of 2001 , the life expectancy of newborns was 59.4 years, and the infant mortality rate was negligible from 7.9 percent (1992) to 7.6 percent in 2001 decreased.

The literacy rate among those over 19 was 71.0 percent, namely 86.8 percent for men and 57.0 percent for women (2001) .

66.5 percent of the population at the 2001 census spoke Spanish , 94.1 percent spoke Aymara , and 0.2 percent spoke Quechua . (2001)

59.4 percent of the population had no access to electricity , 83.4 percent lived without sanitary facilities (2001) .

In 2001, 57.0 percent of households had a radio, 16.7 percent a television, 27.2 percent a bicycle, 0.8 percent a motorcycle, 1.5 percent a car, 0.6 percent a refrigerator, 1, 3 percent a phone. (2001)
