Casamaya ( also Casa Amaya ) is a scattered settlement in the La Paz department on the Altiplano of the South American Andean high mountains in Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Casamaya is the largest town in the canton of Villa Asuncion de Corpaputo in the municipality of Achacachi in the province of Omasuyos . The village is located at an altitude of 3997  m on the banks of the Río Achachkhala, which flows in a north-westerly direction over the Río Acequia into the Río Kjarkajahuira (Río Keka), which flows through Achacachi and flows into the Gulf of Achacachi.

geography

The climate in the Casamaya area is derived from the altitude on the Altiplano and the proximity to the large expanse of water of Lake Titicaca, which mitigates temperature fluctuations.

The annual average temperature is 11 ° C (see Achacachi climate diagram), with the monthly average in the coldest month (July) at 8 ° C only slightly deviating from the warmest months (November to March) at 12 ° C. The climate is arid from June to August with only sporadic rainfall and humid in the summer months, especially from December to March, with monthly rainfall of more than 100 mm. The annual precipitation is around 600 mm.

population

The population of the village has decreased slightly over the past decade:

Transport network

The village is located 108 kilometers by road northwest of La Paz , the capital of the department.

From La Paz, the asphalt national road Ruta 2 leads west to El Alto and further north-west via Vilaque and Palcoco to Batallas . From here the route 2 continues to Copacabana on Lake Titicaca, at Huarina the route 16 branches off to the north, which leads to Achacachi and further along the Peruvian border into the Bolivian lowlands. On the northern edge of Achacachi, the Camino Achacachi-Chachacomani branches off from Ruta 16 to the southeast and after twelve kilometers via Avichaca then reaches Casamaya .
