Princess Anne is a town with the status " Town " and county seat in Somerset County in the US state of Maryland with 3261 inhabitants (2013).
geography
The city is approximately 20 kilometers southwest of Salisbury , 30 kilometers northeast of Crisfield and 140 kilometers southeast of Baltimore . The Manokin River flows through Princess Anne . The US Highway 13 (part of the Ocean Highway ) runs right through the place.
history
The place name was chosen in honor of the British Princess Anne , daughter of George II . The city was founded in 1733 and the place became the administrative seat of Somerset County. Due to its convenient location on the Manokin River with access to the Chesapeake Bay and a connection to the Eastern Shore Railroad , the place developed into a central goods transshipment point in the mid- 18th century .
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore has been located in Princess Anne since 1886 .
