history

John W. Crisfield

The Annemessex , an Indian tribe belonging to the Algonquin, were the indigenous people of the area. Based on this, the place was initially called Annemessex Neck . In 1663 the settler Benjamin Summers (sometimes spelled Somers) from Yorkshire settled there, after which the place was named Somers Cove . The extensive oyster and blue crab stocks in Chesapeake Bay soon proved to be a lucrative line of business and other settlers settled. John W. Crisfield , a politician and president of the Eastern Shore Railroad created a connection to this railway line in 1866, which gave the place a tremendous boom, received city rights in 1872 and renamed Crisfield in his honor . Soon seafood was being shipped to all parts of the United States by rail and sea, and the place was nicknamed the Seafood Capital of the World , which is still used today . In 1904, the City of Crisfield was the second largest city in the state of Maryland after Baltimore, with a population of 25,000. When the seafood yields waned, many residents left the city and some factories went out of business.

The following historically valuable buildings and places are listed on the National Register of Historic Places : Crisfield Armory , Crisfield Historic District , Cullen Homestead Historic District , Make Peace , Nelson Homestead , Capt. Leonard Tawes House and Ward Brothers' House and Shop .

Today Crisfield is a thriving tourist spot that maintains the seafood business on a smaller scale with many specialty restaurants and small processing plants.
