William HH Miller

William Henry Harrison Miller (born September 6, 1840 in Augusta , New York , † May 25, 1917 in Indianapolis , Indiana ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ), who served in the cabinet of US President Benjamin Harrison as attorney general belonged to.

Studies and professional career

Miller first completed a general education course at Hamilton College in Clinton (New York), which he finished in 1861 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) . During the Civil War in 1862 he was a soldier in the 84th Ohio Infantry Regiment . However, during this military service he was never involved in military activities in the civil war.

He then studied law with the future Supreme Court Justice Morrison R. Waite , which was possible at the time. In 1865 he was admitted to the bar in Peru (Indiana). After a brief stint as a lawyer in the small town of Peru, he became a school councilor in Miami County . In 1866 he first settled as a lawyer in Fort Wayne (Indiana) before becoming a partner in the law firm of Benjamin Harrison, the grandson of former US President William Henry Harrison , in Indianapolis in 1874 . In addition to this partnership, Miller advised Harrison in particular on his election campaigns for governor , senator and president.

Attorney General under President Harrison

After Harrison had been elected US President, he appointed William Miller on March 7, 1889 as Attorney General ( Attorney General ) in his cabinet . This held the office until the end of Harrison's presidency on March 4, 1893.

As Minister of Justice, he campaigned intensively for the application of the Sherman Antitrust Act . After leaving the Justice Department, he returned to working as an Indiana attorney.
