history

19th century

Frostburg's beginnings go back to 1811 when surveys were taken for the National Road, which was supposed to transport food and raw materials to the east coast. After US President Thomas Jefferson approved the construction of the road in 1806, Meshach Frost built the first house in what is now Frostburg and named it Highland Hall . This building was used by many celebrities and dignitaries as a stopover on their journey on the National Road, after which more hotels were built.

In 1842 and 1850, respectively, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal reached the neighboring city of Cumberland . This reduced the number of travelers on the National Road, but Frostburg itself continued to be visited. Coal mining became the first major industry in Frostburg, but transportation problems arose early on due to the mountains in West Maryland. It wasn't until the railway line was completed that the coal industry began to flourish.

Visit from President Truman

When US President Harry S. Truman received a Chrysler as a gift after his presidency , he and his wife visited Frostburg on Father's Day in 1953 on his trip. The two signed autographs and talked to the residents. Truman also visited a bedridden elderly lady who had broken her hip.
