Manuel Gil Teixeira Lopes

Manuel Gil Teixeira Lopes , sometimes just Gil Teixeira Lopes (* 1936 in Mirandela ) is a Portuguese painter and university professor.

Life

His father Armindo Teixeira Lopes was a civil servant in Mirandela and became a painter in self-study . After his brother Hilário was born there in 1932, Manuel Gil was born in Mirandela in 1936 before the family moved to Lisbon in 1948.

After completing his painting studies at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Lisboa art school in Lisbon, he became a teacher there in 1960. His main focus was painting and engraving. Since 1964 his works have been shown in numerous exhibitions in Portugal, but also in New York, Bologna, Paris, Liège, Scandinavia, South America and Japan. Since 1955, Lopes has also taken part in over 800 collective exhibitions worldwide, several times in Germany at the Intergrafik Triennale in Berlin, but also at events in Heidelberg, Leipzig and Munich. In Austria he exhibited at the Vienna Biennale in 1974 and in Graz in 1975.

His pictures, graphics and engravings subsequently gained increasing international attention and have been traded on the international art market ever since.

In 1981 the municipal museum Museu Municipal Armindo Teixeira Lopes opened in Mirandela , with the participation of Manuel Gil and his brother Hilário, who laid the foundation of the museum with a donation of several hundred works by their father. Pictures and engravings by Manuel Gil Teixeira Lopes can also be seen there.

Honors

He received the gold medal of the cities of Genoa and Mirandela , and is holder of the order of the Infante Dom Henrique with Comendadors rank. Manuel Gil Teixeira Lopes was a member of the Honorary Commission for the 100th anniversary of the University of Lisbon in 2011.
