Application and award

With the decision of the Saxon cabinet on February 1, 2005, the city of Reichenbach in Vogtland was awarded the contract to host the 5th Saxon State Horticultural Show in 2009. This was granted by Stanislaw Tillich , then Minister of State for Environment and Agriculture . Reichenbach prevailed against five other applicant cities. The cities of Annaberg-Buchholz , Freital (together with Tharandt ), Lauta ( Kamenz district ), Oelsnitz / Erzgeb. and Löbau had applied for the show. On February 6, 2006, the city council passed the partnership agreement for the State Horticultural Show Reichenbach im Vogtland 2009 gGmbH and appointed the municipal supervisory boards elected at the meeting on December 5, 2005.

Landscape planning competition

For the design of the state horticultural show, a limited competition for ideas and implementation was carried out in which a total of 40 participants, eight of which were set by the sponsor, took part. On November 4, 2005, the jury determined the winners of the competition. The first prize went to the Geskes und Hack landscape architects from Berlin.

concept

The basis of the concept was the urban redesign of a former industrial area along the Raumbach, which is directly adjacent to the old town and was characterized by industrial wasteland and decaying residential and commercial buildings. These should be removed in favor of green spaces and create a better connection between Reichenbach and the neighboring cities of Mylau and Netzschkau through cycling and hiking trails .

Garden show area

The site of the 5th Saxon State Garden Show in Reichenbach was divided into four main parts: the Raumbachtal, the Angerviertel, the Schreiterer factory garden and the area of the lower train station.

A main path led from the entrance area on the edge of the old town center into the floodplain of the Raumbach valley. The previously channeled Raumbach received a new bed. The aim was to create new perspectives on the surrounding landscape by incorporating parts of the earlier industrial facilities. In the center of the garden show area was a central square, which was dominated by a spiral tower. This led to the exhibition floors of the flower hall, in which changing exhibitions took place during the state horticultural show. Another path led from there to the observation tower of the "beautiful view" over the "fairy tale forest" back down into the valley. The flower hall was built on the premises of a former weaving mill. The building of the former shoe textile factory CHMüller accommodated the service and information area, sanitary facilities and a catering facility on the upper floor. Various music groups and the Vogtland Philharmonic performed on the forecourt, the so-called "Musikantenhain", during the garden show.

Another part of the garden show was the former waterworks, which was converted into a ballroom for various events. A beer garden was attached to the western slope side. Below was the Waldbühne with around 1000 seats.

To the west of the actual garden show grounds, the area of the former lower train station was redesigned. This was one of three former railway stations in Reichenbach in Vogtland and from 1902 to 1962 the starting point for the narrow-gauge railway to Oberheinsdorf . A "shunting playground" was created here for the state horticultural show, which took up the theme of the railway in a playful way and thus reminded of the history of the property. A hedge labyrinth demarcated the area from a busy road. During the garden show, presentations from various professional associations for horticulture and landscaping took place. The former station building served as an exhibition center and café.

The 5th Saxon State Garden Show ended on October 18, 2009 with a total of 450,000 visitors.

Reuse

After the state horticultural show had ended and the temporary facilities had been dismantled, the area in Raumbachtal was handed over in 2010 as the “Park of Generations”. The fenced area is now used by visitors as a recreation area and is equipped with playgrounds, a mini golf course and a skater track. The main building of the former state horticultural show has been used by the Vogtland Philharmonie Greiz Reichenbach since 2010 . The former flower and butterfly hall is used for exhibitions, other buildings serve as domiciles for regional associations.
