The Landesgartenschau Großenhain took place as the 3rd Saxon State Horticultural Show from April to October 2002 under the motto: "NaturSchauSpiel" . State garden shows have been held in Saxony every three years since 1996.

Application process and award

On September 24, 1997, the city council of Grossenhain unanimously approved the application for the State Garden Show 2002. The award for the organization was awarded on March 3, 1998 by the Saxon State Minister for Environment and Agriculture Rolf Jähnichen . Grossenhain prevailed against ten other applicants. Also the cities of Bad Elster (together with Bad Brambach ), Oelsnitz / Vogtl. , Altenberg , Hoyerswerda , Kamenz , Niesky , Pirna , Grimma and Wurzen as well as the Schlema community ( Erzgebirgskreis ) had applied to host the 2002 State Garden Show.

Concept and implementation

On April 30, 1998, the Großenhain city council decided to hold a competition to design the garden show. 89 planning offices applied for this, from which 30 were selected for the landscape architecture ideas and implementation competition. The Berlin office of Jürgen Weidinger and Jörg Springer emerged as the winners. The award ceremony took place on December 21, 1998. The urban development goal was the redesign of the inner-city Röderaue, including the historic castle ruins. The Großenhain open-air swimming pool located on the site was to be included in the planning and a continuous green corridor created along the Große Röder . At the same time, the recultivation of former industrial areas was planned, whereby it was decided to use the halls of the former textile machine factory as exhibition space. Under the motto “NaturSchauSpiel”, horticultural, urban development and cultural measures were to be linked into a concept that could be experienced and thus become a contemporary nature-art experience.

The city of Großenhain acquired the castle ruins in 1998 for the realization. On April 8, 1999, the Friends of the State Garden Show Grossenhain 2002 eV was founded. On April 28, the articles of association for the State Garden Show Grossenhain 2002 GmbH and the composition of the supervisory board by the city council of Grossenhain were resolved. The first cut of the spade took place on June 19, 1999, the Prime Minister of Saxony, Kurt Biedenkopf . The opening of the 3rd Saxon State Garden Show took place on April 20, 2002.

In August 2002 there was a serious flood disaster in Saxony, which also affected Großenhain. Due to the flooding of parts of the state horticultural show grounds, it had to be closed for several days. For this reason, the organizers decided to extend the show by a few days.

The 3rd Saxon State Garden Show ended on October 20, 2002 with more than 569,000 visitors. Criticism came later from the Saxon State Audit Office, which criticized the fact that the planned investment volume had been significantly exceeded from the original 11 to over 19 million euros.

Garden show area

The approx. 17 hectare area of the 3rd Saxon State Garden Show in Großenhain was divided into three main areas: the inner-city Röderaue, the area of the historic castle ruins with keep and the area of the former textile machine factory and other industrial wastelands. These were connected by the course of the Großer Röder and its tributaries, a network of paths that accompany the river and the “Valley of the Grasses”. The connection between nature and water was characteristic, which was also reflected in the logo and in the mascot "Nix", a figure from the Großenhain world of legends.

Exhibition halls

The site of the former "Textima", a former branch of the GDR textile machine construction combine, was chosen as the location for the exhibition halls . With the help of funds from the Saxon State Ministry for Economics and Labor and the European Union , this industrial wasteland could be recultivated for the State Horticultural Show. In the old foundry halls, changing flower shows took place during the garden show. Another hall served as a butterfly house. A public square was created along the Röder, which was structured as a sunken garden by shrubs and summer flowers.

Castle ruin

The castle ruin , which dates back to the 13th century and has been used commercially as a wool yarn weaving mill since the 19th century, has been converted into the town's cultural center. Various event rooms were created while preserving the historical structure and the ruin-like character. The highlight was the 27 meter high keep, which, as a viewing tower, offered a panoramic view of the garden show grounds and the city. A new town square was built on the outer castle grounds. Much of the historic moat and the remains of an old bridge were also exposed. The architectural firm Springer Architekten from Berlin was awarded the 2004 BDA Saxony Prize for the construction.

NaturErlebnisBad

The existing lido was redesigned in the run-up to the state horticultural show into a modern nature adventure pool with 3,200 square meters of water. There was also a 2100 square meter regeneration pond. Funding from the European Union was also available for this. For water treatment, the bath received a reed sewage treatment plant with a gravel filter, which works without any chemical use. The so far unique project was supported by the German Federal Environment Foundation. The inauguration of the nature adventure pool, at the time of its creation the largest public outdoor pool of its kind in Germany, took place before the start of the garden show on June 1, 2001. In 2003 the pool was awarded the first Saxon State Prize for Building Culture.

Gondola pond

The existing gondola pond system in the center of the site was repaired while maintaining the hydrological conditions. In this context, two dilapidated piers were replaced by new buildings and another adventure area was created with an additional jetty. In addition, the flood protection dike was renewed as a defining element.

Valley of the Grasses

The "Valley of the Grasses" in the western part of the exhibition grounds was connected to the adjacent city park by a pedestrian tunnel. There were u. a. several themed allotments as well as exhibitions on fruit and vegetable growing and breed poultry. A footpath led along the Röder through a former industrial area and was designed in a natural way with the help of grass plantings. Design elements such as seating steps by the water, a fish ladder and the Kneipp path were dedicated to the topic of water.

Reuse

After the state horticultural show was over, the site was used as a public park. The renovated castle ruins serve as the “Grossenhain Castle” cultural center for various public events. The “NaturErlebnisBad” also continues to operate in the summer months. In 2010, a hurricane caused severe damage to the parks, which killed almost all large trees.
