history

Lower Saxony State Horticultural Show 2002

The park of the gardens is located on the former site of the Lower Saxony Garden Culture Center, GKC for short. First of all, the first Lower Saxony State Horticultural Show took place on this site in 2002 . In 2003 the area of the former garden show was further developed and renamed the Park of the Gardens . Since then, various television stations have been reporting regularly on the garden and on a number of garden and plant topics that have been prepared for the media in the park. It started with the Bayerische Rundfunk in BR television as part of the gardening program Querbeet .

Entrance to the "Park of the Gardens"

In 2013 the park opened a permanent exhibition in its visitor center entitled “Green Treasure Chest”, in which a total of 3.6 million euros was invested. Among other things, the exhibition deals with the question of where the plants in the park come from, how the plant names came about, as well as the vegetation conditions of certain groups of plants and their location and growth conditions within the park area. The exhibition also looks at the migration of plants from their distant homeland to Europe. It shows how the mostly exotic plants survived the long transport routes and what high monetary value these plants from distant countries once represented. A 270 ° cinema documents the diversity of the park with its flora from different angles and perspectives.

Parking area from the air

The around 20 meter high observation tower opened in 2014 offers an overview of the site . It is a construction made of steel and larch wood with two counter-rotating spiral staircases and cost around 400,000 euros. The viewing platform allows a panoramic view of the garden show from an unusual perspective. In the same year, the water area of the park was significantly expanded and the climbing playground was redesigned.

The park of the gardens is classified as "particularly child-friendly", with the "Service-Q" of the quality initiative Germany as well as "barrier-free tested" for wheelchair users, the mobility impaired, people with cognitive impairments and partially barrier-free for the blind and people with visual impairments according to "travel for all" certified.

What is special and what gives it its name are the currently 44 model gardens, which provide inspiration and information on domestic home gardens. Advice from the Lower Saxony Garden Academy on all areas of recreational horticulture and many specialist information events on individual plants and green topics round off the offer.

In 2016, a new restaurant was set up in the glass house.

Appearance

The approximately 14 hectare park consists of 44 model gardens, 36 assortments of plants and various other contributions, which are separated from each other by hedges with a total length of 1,170 meters. 28,700 square meters of lawn were laid out between the individual sections of the park. 945 solitary trees are planted in the park area. Around 2,000  rhododendron species and varieties give the park a character typical of the Ammerland.

The pinetum

Johann-Dietrich zu Jeddeloh in the middle of his conifer collection

One of the most valuable collections in Bad Zwischenahn is the conifer collection on a narrow, elongated hill. The Pinetum - a word creation made up of Pinus, Arboretum and Alpinum - presents a small selection of the conifer collection of the tree nursery and plant breeder Johann-Dietrich zu Jeddeloh with around 500 conifers. As an enthusiastic dendrologist , he traveled all over the world and brought back many rarities from all continents. From 1948 until his death in 1999 Johann-Dietrich zu Jeddeloh selected special growth forms of coniferous trees. He dedicated himself in particular to dwarf trees, which only grow a few centimeters a year and therefore stay in shape without regular pruning. When designing the Pinetum, care was taken to ensure that the individual plant species are close together to enable comparisons. Numerous umbrella-shaped, spherical or columnar shapes can be admired here.

Japanese garden

The Japanese garden in the "Park of Gardens" is characterized by clear, clear lines and conveys peace, security and beauty. The few but demanding elements have a great expressiveness that captivates the viewer at any time of the year. A mountain landscape with a watercourse and gravel bed forms the center of the garden. The watercourse is symbolized by gravel in which waves meet. The cut pines - called big bonsais - exude calm and a venerable age. They are over fifty years old and have been worked and cut for twenty years. A bamboo grove and old rhododendrons round off the harmonious picture of the Japanese garden.

rose Garden

A garden is also dedicated to the queen of flowers in the “Park of Gardens”. Over 2500 roses in 50 varieties grow and thrive on an area of 900 square meters. Divided into symmetrical beds, the main paths cross in the middle and meet at a recessed seat. This place is covered by a high wooden pyramid overgrown with climbing roses, clematis and hops. Enjoying the colors and scents of the roses is the top priority in this garden. All plants can be admired up close through the pathways. When choosing varieties, careful attention was paid to robust varieties that are adapted to the climate, thereby avoiding the use of pesticides.

Wellness garden

The wellness garden in the “Park of Gardens” wants to invite the visitor to rediscover his or her body, to listen to oneself in order to recognize our psychological needs such as joie de vivre, a good body feeling, sensuality or the search for meaning and to feel when the energy is used up. Breathe in the scent of the herbs, hear the rush of water and let your thoughts wander. Take a break and gather new strength. The wellness model garden wants to offer the visitor suggestions and suggestions for their own garden.
