In Old Low German , moist pits were called Ros (or Rotz , Roetz ). The name Rostrup ( Rosthorpe , Rostorp ) is derived from this. Like Ekern , Rostrup was built as Eschdorf . The oldest mention of the village can be found in the Oldenburg document book in 1240. In 1428 eight farms were recorded here, five belonged to the Count of Oldenburg and one farm belonged to the Rastede monastery , two more were junker farms. In 1474 the place was burned down by soldiers of Bishop Heinrich von Münster .

Gut Eyhausen is located directly on the Zwischenahner Meer on the border with the Zwischenahn farmers. As a noble free estate, the estate changed hands several times over the centuries. It was first mentioned in the Oldenburg document book in 1331 as Edinchusen . The meaning of the name is most likely derived from the name Edelinghusen , which was used around 1428 , which indicates a "dwelling" for nobles.

The name Deepenfurth is Low German and means something like deep path .

Zwischenahn Air Base

Up until the beginning of the 20th century, agriculture dominated the town. In 1936 an initially civil airfield was built in Rostrup directly on the Zwischenahner Meer, which was converted into a military airfield in 1939 and expanded considerably. As a result, the local farmers had to forego a large part of their eschland for agriculture. It was also decreed that the wing caps of the windmills in Rostrup and Elmendorf were dismantled, as they could pose a threat to aircraft taking off and landing.

Until the end of the Second World War, the airfield served as a base for various associations, including Erprobungskommando 16 , which carried out tests with the Messerschmitt Me 163 from there . In 1944 and 1945 a total of four air raids were carried out by Allied air forces on Rostrup, the last on March 24, 1945. In May 1945, the airfield was then occupied by Canadian units .

From 1952, part of the site was first used as a military hospital by the Royal Air Force and later by the German Armed Forces ; from 1970 onwards, the facility was called the German Armed Forces Hospital Bad Zwischenahn . In 2008 it was relocated to Westerstede, and in 2012 the area previously used by the hospital was sold to a private investor.

The part of the former airport area, which was no longer used for military purposes after 1945, is today largely used by the Park of Gardens , the Golf Club am Meer as a golf course and by the Oldenburg / Bad Zwischenahn air sports club as a glider airfield.

With the construction of the air base and the associated settlements, first for the German and later for the British employees, the once village-like character of Rostrup changed permanently. Today the place is characterized by continuous development with many apartment buildings and by social housing.

education

Rostrup primary school

The catchment area of the elementary school not only includes Rostrup itself, but also the Ohrwege and Dänikhorst farmers , whose schools have been closed in the 1970s. The primary school is also connected to a speech therapy class and a school kindergarten , which are attended by students from all over the community.

Primary school Christophorus

The Catholic primary school for the Bad Zwischenahn community is located in the same building as the Rostrup primary school and teaches around 70 children in four classes.

Park of the Gardens

The Lower Saxony State Horticultural Show took place on the site of the former horticultural research institute in 2002 . After its end, the green area with its show gardens was preserved and is used as a park of gardens as a public recreation park. Cultural events take place here in summer.

traffic

Rostrup is not connected to the trunk road network since the then federal highway 75 was downgraded to a state or district road after the completion of the highway 28 between Westerstede and Oldenburg .

Line 350 ( Oldenburg - Bad Zwischenahn - Westerstede ) runs every hour, while line 370 runs on weekdays from Bad Zwischenahn to Rastede . Several school bus routes also connect Rostrup to local public transport . All lines run in the Bremen / Lower Saxony transport association .

Ferries stop about every hour in summer, and they circle the Zwischenahner Meer with stops at the piers in Bad Zwischenahn , Rostrup and Dreibergen in about an hour.

Others

  • In 1986, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the shooting club, an original Bavarian maypole from the friendly Turkish field was set up in the middle of the village . After the tree made of wood became rotten a few years later and fell over in a storm, it was replaced by a steel mast bought from a shipyard.
