The State Horticultural Show Oschatz took place as the 4th Saxon State Horticultural Show from April to October 2006 under the motto: "Saxony is blooming here" . State garden shows have usually been held every three years in Saxony since 1996, but this was the first time in Oschatz.

Application process and award

On July 6, 1999, the city of Oschatz was awarded the contract to host the 4th Saxon State Garden Show 2005. This was granted by the Saxon State Minister for Environment and Agriculture Rolf Jähnichen . In addition to the concept, the city's very low debt was also decisive. Oschatz prevailed against eight other applicants. Also the cities of Görlitz , Grimma , Hoyerswerda , Niesky , Oelsnitz / Vogtl. , Pirna and Plauen and the municipality of Schlema ( Erzgebirgskreis ) had applied to host the 2006 State Horticultural Show.

On October 28th, the Saxon Environment and Agriculture Minister Steffen Flath handed over the approval notice from the Free State of Saxony, according to which the State Garden Show 2006 was supported with 4.8 million euros. Overall, an investment volume of 9.6 million euros was calculated.

Concept and implementation

A landscape architecture competition was held for the design of the 2006 State Garden Show. The Berlin firm Weidinger Landschaftsarchitekten was awarded first prize in a joint venture with Springer Architects . The aim of the concept was to transform the Döllnitzaue into a leisure and recreation landscape, including the existing green spaces, and to network it with the nearby city center and the surrounding landscape. In terms of content, the show was based on the idea of sustainability in order to be able to continue to use the systems created after the event. This was symbolized by the mascot of the state horticultural show "Oschgar", a young tree.

On May 12, 2003, the Prime Minister of Saxony, Georg Milbradt, broke ground in the presence of the Lord Mayor of Oschatz, Andreas Kretschmar and the President of the Horticultural Association, Claus Engler.

Garden show area

The site of the 4th Saxon State Horticultural Show in Oschatz essentially extended into the floodplain of the Döllnitz River and included existing recreational areas such as the Oschatz Heimattierpark. This was redesigned and equipped with additional enclosures and aviaries. The area of an allotment garden in the south of the city was also included as an additional area in the state horticultural show. In 2002 the facility won the silver medal in the federal competition “Gardens in Urban Development” .

City walkway

The garden show area was connected to the old town of Oschatz by the city footbridge, a curved pedestrian bridge with a total length of 113 meters and a height of up to eight meters. This also led to the green roof of the flower hall.

Flower hall

The flower hall was built as an event location for the changing flower shows that take place during the state horticultural show and, due to its distinctive architecture, formed an eye-catcher on the exhibition grounds. It has a diameter of 32 meters, a height of around ten meters and a column-free interior. The outer facade consists of wooden slats, the roof has been greened.

Dollnitz Bridge

A pedestrian bridge made of textile-reinforced concrete was created to connect the main part of the garden show and the area on the other bank of Döllnitz . The technology, which was implemented for the first time in the world, instead of using traditional steel girders for building bridges, enabled a weight saving of around 80%, so that the structure only weighed five tons. The bridge was part of a research project by the Institute for Solid Construction at the Technical University of Dresden and was built by the Oschatz Concrete Works.

Rose lake

The Rosensee was created in connection with the state horticultural show. The artificial body of water fed with groundwater has a water surface of approx. 10,000 square meters and was planted with water lilies during the show. In addition, a rowing boat rental and a jetty were built to observe the flora and fauna of the lake.

Transport links

The narrow-gauge railway from Oschatz to Mügeln was included in the concept for the transport connection of the garden exhibition site. During the show, it received two additional stops at the Oschatzer Markt and the zoo. The Oschatz Süd and Kleinforst-Rosensee stops were located directly at the entrances, so that the train could also be used as a means of transport within the garden show grounds.

Visitors arriving by Deutsche Bahn could also take the Döllnitzbahn from Oschatz train station to the main entrance. For this, the validity of the Saxony ticket was extended and this was also recognized by the Döllnitzbahn. In addition, there were special admission ticket vouchers which, in conjunction with a DB train ticket, offered cheaper admission prices.

The 4th Saxon State Garden Show ended on October 8, 2006 with a total of over 500,000 visitors, with around 330,000 tickets being sold.

Reuse

After the state horticultural show in 2006, the area was handed over as "O-Schatz-Park" as an urban recreation area. Here is u. a. the zoo, which had been renewed for the garden show. In addition to various bird species, you can see fallow deer, mouflons, kangaroos, porcupines and prairie dogs, rhesus monkeys and rare domestic animals.

The flower hall was given to the association Lebenshilfe e. V. handed over as a "play barn". This association also takes care of the preservation of the zoo and the Rosensee as a local recreation area. Other areas are now used as play areas, skate and BMX tracks. The bungalows originally built for various exhibitors at the garden show will be used as a European youth camp.

From June 23 to 26, 2011, a "Small State Garden Show" took place in the O-Schatz Park on the former State Horticultural Show. One of the attractions was the "largest coffee pot collection in the world" exhibited in the former flower hall. In addition, numerous family and recreational sports events took place.
