The 2nd Saxon State Horticultural Show took place from May 7 to October 17, 1999 under the motto " Post- mining landscape" mainly in Olbersdorf and Zittau and took place simultaneously with the small state horticultural show in Neustadt near Coburg and the Grün99 state horticultural shows in Weil on the Rhine and with the one in Oberhausen . Around 20 million DM were invested.
history
prehistory
Coal has been mined in the “Glückauf” open-cast mine in Olbersdorf since the 20th century . In 1938 the opencast mine was briefly closed, but reopened after the Second World War in order to supply Zittau and the surrounding area with raw lignite. In 1948, for example, a 2.4 km long connecting line to the Olbersdorf Oberdorf station was built on the route of the narrow-gauge railway Zittau – Kurort Oybin / Kurort Jonsdorf , which was put into operation in 1949. The coal in Olbersdorf (and under Zittau) was known for its excellent chargeability.
As early as 1985, the plans for the expansion of the Olbersdorf opencast mine into the “Zittau Süd” opencast mine were in progress. The Olbersdorfer Niederdorf and the prefabricated buildings in Zittau-Süd should have given way. In Olbersdorf, the planning went so far that the former Olbersdorf church had to give way as early as 1986 and land was slowly purchased.
In addition, as a replacement for the citizens of the southern city of Zittau and Niederolbersdorf, a prefabricated building area was built in the upper village of Olbersdorf. It consists of WBS-70 prefabricated buildings .
The Council of Ministers of the GDR decided on March 1, 1990 to stop coal production in Olbersdorf. The actual cessation took place on September 30, 1991. In the entire open-cast mine from 1908 to 1991 a total of 21.5 million tons of coal were mined.
In Zittau there was already the West Park, which had existed since the turn of the century. An old and valuable tree population dominates here. The then leisure pool "Westbad", which was inaugurated in 1926 by the Zittau mayor Zwingenberger with Zittau and Olbersdorf associations, was also to be rebuilt in the Westpark.
Application and further development
As early as 1992, the city of Zittau applied to host the 2nd Saxon State Garden Show in 1999; on February 27, 1994, the city of Zittau was finally awarded the contract and the first planning work began. Since a pure state horticultural show in the Zittau area was not possible, they agreed on a joint show with the neighboring municipality of Olbersdorf.
In the latter, the renovation of the opencast mine with 225 employees was started between 1991 and 1993. In 1994 at the latest, the remediation and recultivation of the opencast mine began with the help of the LMBV . After the groundwater began to rise in August 1996 when the pumps were taken out of service, the remaining open pit was flooded between September 15, 1996 and March 2, 1999 by the introduction of the Grundbach .
concept
Since the flooding began in 1996, it was ready in time for the State Garden Show. As old mine buildings and structures were demolished beforehand, the renovated area could be handed over to the State Garden Show in April 1997.
All objects in the southern part of the State Garden Show, in Olbersdorf, have been redesigned. B. the main avenue with linden trees and the various themed gardens , as well as the large fairground, which is used for larger events such as the O-See-Challenge. The beach itself could only be released for use later. The European garden occupies a large area, in which the triangle (Germany-Poland-Czech Republic), in which the region is located, is to be illustrated. In addition, the open-mindedness is reinforced by the garden design of the Zittau twin town Pistoia .
Various other attractions were created by the Olbersdorf community in the years that followed, such as the “Green Classroom” and the O-See Plaza at the entrance. The “Olbersdorf Freizeit-Oase” stop was also built in Olbersdorf. The Zittau city line A, operated by the KVG Dreiländereck , serves it on the route between Zittau-Nord, the city center, Pethau and Hörnitz . Despite the request in 2013 to separate Zittau city lines and regional traffic, it was decided to continue to serve this stop and the town of Hörnitz. The road that has been built that leads to the lake is called “Zum See” in the Zittau area and “Zur Landesgartenschau” in Olbersdorf.
With the opening of the horticultural show in 1999, the site was the first redeveloped opencast mine in the new federal states to be released from mining supervision and handed over to subsequent use.
As an absolute contrast to the modern park in Olbersdorf, there is the revised West Park in the Zittau part of the state horticultural show. The long-standing park has a large and old population of trees. The former Westbad outdoor swimming pool has been redesigned into a water lily pool with a large park lawn connected to it. In addition, an adventure playground for younger visitors to the garden show was built in Westpark. In addition, 13 changing indoor flower shows took place in a 700 square meter glass house at the city nursery.
The "Zittau onion" served as the mascot of the 2nd Saxon State Garden Show. Even in the colloquial language of the region, the show became the “Zittau Garden Show”, even if this term - still widespread - is wrong. The north side of the Olbersdorfer See is also incorrectly called the “Zittau side”, in full conviction that it is in Zittau.
Reuse
Even today, the Olbersdorf site is still very much used. This makes it the most sustainable garden show in Saxony to date. In the period after the state horticultural show, the “Captain Hook” restaurant was built, as well as the Seestern rubber dinghy rental (formerly a surf school) and the “Zittauer Gebirge” campsite, which is the easternmost in Germany.
Today many events take place at the Olbersdorfer See, abbreviated O-See, for example the May fire. In addition, the O-See Challenge has been taking place since (unofficially) 2000, which began on July 9, 2000 with 5 people. In 2014 the ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships also took place in Olbersdorf.
However, you will find the name Zittau with all references to the World Cup, as Zittau finances the O-See Challenge and the World Cup as the main sponsor alongside other sponsors. This location is wrong, especially when considering that the municipality of Olbersdorf is rebuilding and releasing the beach with its own funds. In a questioning of the main organizer, the latter gave the trivial reason that the name “Olbersdorf” would hardly fit on a logo.
