The inaccessible former train station area of Oelsnitz, located north of the city center, is about 15 hectares in size and is being permanently transformed into green recreational and adventure areas, ecologically upgraded and made reusable in many ways. As a reminder of its industrial history, parts of the existing facilities are included in the design.

In 1971 the extraction of hard coal in the Lugau-Oelsnitzer hard coal area ended , so that the central transshipment point of the area was no longer needed for the transport of hard coal , wood, steel and fuel. Since 2003, the City-Bahn has been using two through tracks of the twelve-hectare track system for passenger traffic. With the measures for the state horticultural show, there will be an improved connection of residential areas, school location and economic facilities to the city center in the future.

Traffic connection

City-Bahn at the Oelsnitz / Bahnhof stop

Oelsnitz / Erzgeb. is connected to the A 4 and A 72 motorways with the Stollberg-Nord, Stollberg-West, Hartenstein and Hohenstein-Ernstthal motorway junctions. In addition, the city is well connected with the cities of Stollberg, Chemnitz and Glauchau by connecting roads. In 2015 the City-Bahn will stop directly at the State Garden Show. The city is also easy to reach via the railway line between Dresden and Nuremberg ( Sachsen-Franken-Magistrale ).

Reuse

After the state horticultural show, the facility became a public park, flowing into the landscape but also to the city of Oelsnitz / Erzgeb. and passes to the community of Hohndorf . The most important elements of the state garden show are preserved after the show and are used in a variety of ways as a community and family park. In May 2019, the city received the Karl Foerster Award for the creation and further development of green spaces .

On May 13, 2013, Minister of State Frank Kupfer planted the tree of the year 2013 together with the mayors Hans-Ludwig Richter (Oelsnitz / Erzgeb.) And Matthias Groschwitz (Hohndorf) and the President of the Saxon Tree Nursery Association, Wolfgang Müller, in the presence of the state parliament member Uta Windisch , a wild apple ( Malus sylvestris ), on the site of the future state horticultural show. In the preparatory phase of the State Garden Show, a total of more than 400 new trees were planted. The alternating planting on around 4,000 m² contained around 100,000 flower bulbs, around 100,000 spring bloomers and around 70,000 summer flowers. Extensive shrubs were planted on about 2000 m² in the track gardens and near the ponds. In the entrance area and next to the bridge, intensive shrubs were planted on around 1000 m². On November 6, 2013, the Landesgartenschaugesellschaft celebrated the topping-out ceremony a good four months after construction work began on the large signal box and flower hall. During the garden show, the upper floor of the large signal box serves as a viewing platform that allows a panoramic view of the entire exhibition area. There are barrier-free sanitary facilities on the ground floor. In the 600 square meter flower hall, changing exhibits from all areas of floristry and horticulture can be seen. In the small signal box, Chemnitz artist Frank Maibier dealt with the history of the place with the installation "Poetry of Energy" in the form of a floor mosaic made from a ton of coal combined with the text "Unreal May Day" by the writer Reiner Kunze , honorary citizen of the city of Oelsnitz and thus created a transition to the present. Other works of art were created in the park by local artists, including:

  • Shore wind, Teo Richter, Chemnitz
  • Bird dance, Christoph Roßner, Bad Schlema
  • Wooden sculptures in the form of musical instruments and plant motifs by the artist group exponaRt , as well as the
  • Paper mache figures "regulars"

In the entrance area of the landscape park, the former train station building was renovated in accordance with the monument and converted into a clubhouse with multi-purpose use. On the forecourt of the building is the newly created fountain "Black Gold" , a work by the Lugau artist Klaus Hirsch . The materials used, polished basalt and its shapes are reminiscent of the tunnels and shafts of the former coal production, the light of the longing of the miners for daylight. The bubbling fountain can stand for the wealth that coal mining once brought to its owners, but also for the future of the brine discovered in the mine.

On May 9, 2014 Bernd Birkigt , Managing Director of the State Garden Show Oelsnitz / Erzgeb. gGmbH in the presence of Hans-Ludwig Richter, Mayor of the city, Dr. Michael Wilhelm, State Secretary of the Saxon State Ministry of the Interior, gave the planners and other supporters the foundation stone for the graduation tower . This is 42 meters long, 10 meters high and has a grading area of 700 square meters. There are 5000 liters of brine in circulation per hour . The background for the construction was an expert opinion from 2013, in which the formation of salty, thermal water (brine) under Oelsnitz / Erzgeb. was established.
