The Big Band of the Bundeswehr (BigBandBw) was in 1971 at the initiative of the then Federal Minister of Defense Helmut Schmidt founded and is the Show Orchestra of the Bundeswehr . Helmut Schmidt wanted a “modern sound for a modern army”. The band is stationed in the Mercator barracks in Euskirchen , tours Germany all year round and is particularly involved in charity events . Furthermore, she can be seen and heard again and again in various television programs and on tours abroad.

The Big Band played in public for the first time on May 26, 1972 in front of 80,000 spectators on the occasion of the inauguration of the Munich Olympic Stadium . The event was broadcast on television, as was the international match between Germany and the Soviet Union that followed. In addition to great versatility, the sophisticated stage show is a trademark of the band, as are the arrangements that are only written and only played by the Bundeswehr Big Band.
