Philipp Schug

Philipp Schug (* 1983 in Lebach ) is a German musician ( trombone , composition ) of modern jazz .

Live and act

Schug had his first trumpet lessons at the age of six. From 2004 to 2009 he studied trombone at the Folkwang University of the Arts with Bart van Lier and Christopher Houlding . From 1999 to 2004 he was a member of the Saarland Youth Jazz Orchestra; from 1999 to 2005 he belonged to the Little BigBand under the direction of Christof Thewes . From 2004 he studied on a scholarship at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 2006 he received the “Jazzwerkruhr” award with his band Oma Heinz .

As lead trombonist, Schug appeared in Carla Bly's jazz opera " Escalator over the Hill " in the Philharmonie Essen in 2006 , a. a. with Carla Bley, Steve Swallow , David Moss , Christian and Wolfgang Muthspiel . Since 2007 he has been a member of the Club des Belugas project ; since 2008 he has also worked with his Philipp Schug Quartet (album of the same name in 2015). In 2009 he was awarded the jazz prize by the city of Sankt Ingbert. From 2012 to 2017 he worked as the first trombonist in the Saarland Police Orchestra; then he switched to the big band of the Bundeswehr . In the course of his musician career he has worked a. a. with Bob Mintzer , Jon Faddis , David Linx , Ernie Hammes , Brenda Boykin , Judy Spellman , Claudio Puntin , Wolfgang Puschnig and Philip Catherine . Recordings were made with the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, Philipp Schug Quartet, Thoneline Orchestra ( Panta Rhei , 2011) and the Unidentified Flying Orchestra .

Since 2014 he has been teaching jazz trombone at the Saar University of Music ; his trombone school “Trombone Essentials” was published in 2015 by “Edition Crescendo” in Würzburg.
