history

In 1289 the building was described as "one of the most important in the Hayner care". The castle was also the residence of the sons Friedrich and Dietzmann of Landgrave Albrecht the Naughty . In 1291 the castle was fortified as a border house because of its proximity to Brandenburg and a keep was built as a free-standing tower in the 13th century .

On June 26th 1547 the castle was destroyed during a city fire. In 1557, Elector August gave the order to rebuild the building, but it was besieged by the Swedes in the Thirty Years' War in 1637 and 1642 and destroyed again. In 1662 the Elector Johann Georg II had the ruins repaired. Wolf Caspar von Klengel then bought "the old Hayn Castle". In the files of the 17th century the building was mentioned as the "castle" of Grossenhain. On May 31, 1663, Elector Johann Georg II appeared in Grossenhain to check the reconstruction of the building. However, the building was damaged again in 1704 in the Northern War and on June 8, 1744 in a city fire. The castle was surrounded by a moat in 1745; its walls are six meters thick and were considered impregnable.

In 1998 the city of Großenhain bought the old castle and expanded it into a cultural center in 2000. It was then inaugurated two years later and is used for culture, art, meetings and events of all kinds. The former keep functions as a walk-in observation tower .
