Dietrich was born around 1260 as the third son of Albrecht the Degenerate and Margaretha von Staufen , daughter of Emperor Friedrich II .

After Dietrich's mother fled the Wartburg in 1270 as a result of her husband's affection for Kunigunde von Eisenberg , Dietrich and his older brother Friedrich the Freidige were raised at the court of their uncle, Margrave Dietrich von Landsberg . When the brothers had grown up, they and their brother Heinrich fought their father, because he favored the son Apitz (Albrecht) , conceived with Kunigunde , by wanting to bequeath the Landgraviate of Thuringia to him.

Dietrich first came into the possession of the Pleißenland , after the death of Henry the Illustrious in 1288 he received the Lausitz mark and after the death of Friedrich Tutas in 1291 the Osterland.

In 1301 the Archbishop of Magdeburg, Burchard II of Blankenburg, sold him the Droissig and Burgwerben castles for 2,000 marks of Stendal silver , which were later not redeemed. The castle and town of Spremberg were also sold.

In 1303 Dietrich sold the western part of the Lausitz region to the Brandenburg margrave Otto IV.

Robbed of his inheritance by the German King Adolf von Nassau , he regained it after his overthrow. When King Albrecht I invaded the Easter country with a large army, Dietrich and Friedrich at the head of armed citizens and farmers as well as Braunschweig cavalry inflicted a complete defeat in the Battle of Lucka on May 31, 1307.

Dietrich probably died in Leipzig on December 10, 1307, possibly after an assassination attempt. According to a later uncertain tradition, he is said to have been murdered on December 24th or 25th, 1307 during the Christmas mass by a Philip of Nassau in the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig .

family

His marriage to Jutta, daughter of Count Berthold VIII. Von Henneberg from the sex of Henneberg , whom he married around 1295, probably not entitled to inherit children followed.
