Burchard II of Blankenburg († April 27 or May 18, 1305 in Magdeburg ) was Archbishop of Magdeburg from 1296 to 1305 .

Life

Burchard was the son of Count Siegfried II von Blankenburg and Countess Mechthild von Wohldenberg . As a later-born son, he was destined for the clergy at an early age. In order to secure his benefices , he took on a variety of spiritual offices. He became canon in Magdeburg on April 21, 1275 , canon in Halberstadt in 1277 , canon in Hildesheim in 1288, provost of Nienburg on March 6, 1288 , chamberlain in Magdeburg on November 24, 1289 , archdeacon of Langenweddingen in 1295 and his election took place at the end of January 1296 to the Archbishop of Magdeburg .

On July 12, 1296 he received papal confirmation from Boniface VIII in Rome and a little later in Agnani the consecration and the pallium. It was now like his predecessors. He had to fight with the nobility , and the citizens of Magdeburg on his side destroyed Randau Castle . As in the time of his predecessor in 1285, persecution of Jews took place under him in 1301 . In the same year he sold the Droissig and Burgwerben castles to the Wettiner Dietrich IV of Thuringia for 2000 marks of Stendal silver , which were later not redeemed.

The financial distress of the archbishopric continued under Burchard, so that he was forced to sell various goods. For example, he sold the village of Unseburg to the Riddagshausen monastery for 1,000 silver marks and redeemed the Sommerschenburg castle that had been relocated . Some virtues, especially benevolence and altruism, are ascribed to his personal character.

Burchard's grave site is unknown.

Legend

Once upon a time, evil spirits raged against fishermen and boatmen in the Neuendorf lake. When Burchard heard this, he went there, blessed the lake and thus drove away the spirits, so that no more accidents were heard. This is why the lake is still called the "Holy Lake" today.
