The Choptank River is a significant tributary of the Chesapeake Bay on the east coast of the United States . The river has its source in Kent County in Delaware and then runs through the state of Maryland on the Delmarva Peninsula . The river runs north of the Nanticoke River .
The catchment area of the Choptank River covers around 2,600 km². About 580 km² of it are open water areas. 48 percent of the area drained by the Choptank River is used for agriculture.
The course of the Choptank was used, among others, by the slavery opponent and member of the so-called Underground Railroad Harriet Tubman when she led escaped slaves from Maryland to Pennsylvania and Canada .
