Nicholas County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Summersville .

The county is located just southeast of the geographic center of West Virginia and has an area of 1,695 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Braxton County , Webster County , Greenbrier County , Fayatte County, and Clay County .

history

Nicholas County was formed on January 30, 1818 from parts of Kanawha County and Randolph County. It was named after Wilson Cary Nicholas , a US senator and governor of Virginia .

The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.2 men.
