The county is located in northwestern West Virginia, bordering Ohio , the border being formed by the Ohio River , and has an area of 976 square kilometers, of which 25 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Pleasants County , Ritchie County , Wirt County , Jackson County , Meigs County, Ohio, and Athens County, Ohio.

history

Wood County was formed on December 21, 1798 from parts of Harrison County. It was named after James Wood , a brigadier general in the American Revolutionary War and later governor of Virginia .

As of the 2000 census , Wood County had 87,986 people in 36,275 households and 24,884 families. The population density was 92 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.32 percent white, 1.01 percent African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.51 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.14 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.77 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.58 percent of the population.

The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 92.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were statistically 89.3 men.
