Logan County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . At the 2010 census , the county had 36,743 residents and a population density of 33.3 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Logan .

The county is located in southwest West Virginia, about 35 km from the Kentucky border, and covers an area of ​​1,108 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Lincoln County , Boone County , Wyoming County, and Mingo County .

history

Logan County was formed on January 12, 1824 from parts of Cabell and Kanawha Counties and Giles and Tazewell Counties in Virginia. It was named after the chief Logan of the Mingo Indians, a subgroup of the Iroquois . In 1921, one of the largest armed uprisings in US history took place here, the Battle of Blair Mountain , when miners tried to obtain better working conditions.
