Lincoln County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Hamlin .

The county is located in southwest West Virginia, about 45 km from Ohio in the northwest , about 25 miles from Kentucky in the southwest , and covers an area of ​​1,136 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Putnam County , Kanawha County , Boone County , Logan County , Mingo County , Wayne County, and Cabell Counties .

Lincoln County was formed on February 23, 1867 from parts of Boone, Cabell, Kanawha and Putnam Counties. It was named after Abraham Lincoln , the 16th President of the United States.

As of the 2000 census , Lincoln County had 22,108 people in 8,664 households and 6,532 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 99.04 percent white, 0.06 percent African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.06 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.06 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.61 percent were descended from two or more races.
