Lincoln County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Hamlin .

The county is located in southwest West Virginia, about 45 km from Ohio in the northwest , about 25 miles from Kentucky in the southwest , and covers an area of 1,136 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Putnam County , Kanawha County , Boone County , Logan County , Mingo County , Wayne County, and Cabell Counties .

Lincoln County was formed on February 23, 1867 from parts of Boone, Cabell, Kanawha and Putnam Counties. It was named after Abraham Lincoln , the 16th President of the United States.

As of the 2000 census , Lincoln County had 22,108 people in 8,664 households and 6,532 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 99.04 percent white, 0.06 percent African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.06 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.06 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.61 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.55 percent of the population.
Of the 8,664 households, 33.0 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 60.4 percent were married couples living together, 10.8 percent were single mothers, 24.6 percent were non-families, 22.2 percent were single households, and 10.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 2.94.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.1 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 97.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 96.0 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 22,662 , and the median income for a family is $ 28,297. Males had a median income of $ 30,810 versus $ 18,270 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,073. 22.8 percent of families and 27.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 37.6 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 20.8 percent were people over 65 years of age.
