Jefferson County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Charles Town .

The County is located in the extreme northeast corner of West Virginia, is bordered to the south and southeast of Virginia , to the east and northeast Maryland and has an area of 548 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Washington County, Maryland, Loudoun County, Virginia, Clarke County, Virginia, and Berkeley County .

Jefferson County was formed on January 8, 1801 from parts of Berkeley County. It was named after Thomas Jefferson , the third President of the United States.

According to the 2000 census , Jefferson County had 42,190 people in 16,165 households and 11,315 families. The population density was 78 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.02 percent white, 6.09 percent African American, 0.60 percent Native American, 0.00 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.60 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.37 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.74 percent of the population.

The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 97.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 95.4 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 44,374 , and the median income for a family is $ 51,351. Males had a median income of $ 35,235 versus $ 26,531 for females.
