Mercer County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . At the 2010 census , the county had 40,814 residents and a population density of approximately 34 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Celina .

The county is located in the far west of Ohio, borders Indiana and has an area of ​​1226 square kilometers, of which 26 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Van Wert County , Auglaize County , Shelby County , Darke County , Jay County, Indiana, and Adama County, Indiana.

Mercer

The battle of the Wabash River on November 4, 1791 took place in what was then Mercer County.

Mercer County was formed from parts of Darke County on February 12, 1820 and finally organized in 1824. It was named after Hugh Mercer (1726–1777), a brigadier general in the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War , who was fatally wounded in the Battle of Princeton .

In 1837 Van Wert County was incorporated into the MC. Celina was founded in 1839 and was the capital of Mercer County (previously St. Marys, Ohio was the capital). In 1848, areas in the south were added. When Auglaize County , Ohio was formed (February 14, 1848), the MC received additional territories. Since then, it has had its current form.

Many Germans moved to this county in the mid to late 19th century. Most came from the north-west of the German-speaking area and from Prussia.

According to the 2000 census , there were 40,924 people in Mercer County. Of these, 519 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 14,756 households and 11,022 families. For the entire county, the population was composed of 29.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 21.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 99.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 96.2 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 42,742 , and the median income for a family is $ 50,157. Males had a median income of $ 35,508 versus $ 22,857 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,531. 4.6 percent of families and 6.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 6.9 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 7.8 percent were people over 65 years of age.
