Celina is a city in Mercer County in western American state of Ohio , about halfway between Cincinnati and Toledo . Celina is located on the west bank of Grand Lake St. Marys , a 55 km² artificial lake, about half the size of the Müritz in Germany. Celina has some 10,000 inhabitants (as of the 2000 census ) and is the seat of the administration ( the county seat ) of Mercer County.
The nearest airport (Lakefield Airport, ICAO code KCQA) is 10 km from Celina and is primarily used by private planes and charter traffic.
history
Celina was founded in 1834 within thick forests. Sawmills were soon built and the workforce began to attract. The place saw a notable increase in population in the 1880s when oil and gas were discovered in the area. The production of furniture quickly became another important industry. This remained so until the middle of the 20th century. The largest local furniture company was the Mersman Brothers Company , which was the market leader in the manufacture of tables in the United States during the Depression .
The historic city center was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as Celina Main Street Commercial Historic District in 1982 and thus placed under a preservation order.
education
