history

The history of the village is linked to that of the Raccoon Township. The township was established on March 24, 1805, and elections were held on the 3rd Monday in April 1805. In 1803 the first log cabin was built on the banks of Big Raccoon Creek . The first settlement arose in Section 1 of the township. At first it was mainly settlers of Welsh descent who farmed here.

Daniel Boone , James Burford and Colonel Robert Safford came to this area as early as 1792 . After staying and hunting for two years, the three trappers claimed to have killed over 100 bears on Big Raccoon Creek. The animal traps and other utensils from that time that Boone gave to his partner, Colonel Safford, have survived to this day and are in the possession of the Colonel's descendants.

Centerville was founded in Section 19 of the township. The founding date is May 6, 1835. In 1880 Centerville had a population of 272 people.
