The first settler in what is now Kettering was John Patterson, who built his log cabin here in 1789. However, it was not until 1841, when the population had grown enough, to be able to found a township of its own , the Van Buren Township . The township existed in this form for more than 100 years.

In November 1952, the residents of the Van Buren Township confirmed the establishment of a separate community in the area of ​​the Township. The new parish was named after its most prominent citizen, Charles F. Kettering , the inventor of electric ignition for internal combustion engines. Kettering lived here from 1914 until his death in 1958.

In 1955, an extraordinary census was held in Kettering, showing a population of 38,118. This led to the elevation of the community to the city on July 24, 1955 . The city constitution came into force on January 1, 1956.
