Kettering is a city in Greene Counties and Montgomery Counties in the US state of Ohio . It is a suburb of nearby Dayton . According to the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 57,502 inhabitants.
It is the largest suburb of the metropolitan area of Dayton . According to the United States Census Bureau, it covers an area of 48.4 square kilometers.
The city is one of the few to cross a county line . Only a very small part to the east of the city is in Greene County, the vast majority is in Montgomery County. The city borders Dayton , Riverside and Oakwood to the north . It is bounded to the west by Carrollton and Moraine , to the south by Centerville and Washington Township and to the east by Beavercreek and Sugarcreek Township .
The first settler in what is now Kettering was John Patterson, who built his log cabin here in 1789. However, it was not until 1841, when the population had grown enough, to be able to found a township of its own , the Van Buren Township . The township existed in this form for more than 100 years.
In November 1952, the residents of the Van Buren Township confirmed the establishment of a separate community in the area of the Township. The new parish was named after its most prominent citizen, Charles F. Kettering , the inventor of electric ignition for internal combustion engines. Kettering lived here from 1914 until his death in 1958.
In 1955, an extraordinary census was held in Kettering, showing a population of 38,118. This led to the elevation of the community to the city on July 24, 1955 . The city constitution came into force on January 1, 1956. The city council consists of seven members, made up of one elected representative from each of the four city districts, two additional elected representatives and the mayor.
At the time of the United States Census 2000, 57,502 people lived in Kettering. The population density was 1187.9 people per km ². There were 26,936 housing units at an average of 556.4 per km ². The population of Kettering was 95.23% White , 1.66% Black or African American , 0.18% Native American , 1.38% Asian , 0.02% Pacific Islander , 0.33% of other races belong to and 1.19% named two or more races. 1.11% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Kettering distributed to 25,657 households out of which 26.9% were living in children under 18 years. 48.7% of households were married, 9.5% had a female head of household without a husband, and 38.7% were not families. 33.4% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 12.7% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.85.
The population was divided into 22.5% minors, 7.5% 18–24 year olds, 29.4% 25–44 year olds, 22.3% 45–64 year olds and 18.3% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 women there were 90.5 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 86.7 men.
The median household income in Kettering was 45,051 US dollars, and the median family income reached the level of 55,849 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 41,558 compared with $ 28,921 for women.
