Delphos is a city in Allen County and Van Wert County in the US state of Ohio . It is located in the metropolitan area of Lima , the county seat of Allen County. Delphos has a population of just under 7,000 (2000 census).
history
The German pastor John Otto Bredeick, in the January 23, 1794 Verl was born, founded the city of Delphos in the 1849 Great Black Swamp (German Great Black Swamp ), a marshy area at the Miami and Erie Canal . Many emigrants who left Verl and the surrounding communities because of the bitter hardship prevailing there at the time, settled in Delphos and the surrounding area.
For a long time Delphos grew faster and was more important than the neighboring towns of Lima and Van Wert , as Delphos was conveniently located at the intersection of the Miamikanal and Pennsylvania Railroad . In 1851 Delphos became its own municipality. Since then it has celebrated the traditional "Canal Day Festival" every year.
From January 1, 1883, Delphos was the terminus of a narrow-gauge railway, the Cleveland, Delphos and St. Louis Railroad , which only ran to Mount Blanchard when it opened . By June 1883 it was extended to Carey . After various reorganizations and mergers of the railway companies, this railway line was expanded to standard gauge in 1890. The Cleveland, Delphos and St. Louis Railroad became the Pittsburg, Akron and Western Railroad (PA&W). This was leased to the Northern Ohio Railway and the Lake Erie and Western Railroad in 1895 .
education
Delphos has two high schools , an elementary school and a municipal school . Jefferson High is known for its numerous American football teams and clubs.
The place maintains the partnership between Verl and Delphos , which is explained by the origins of the city's founder Bredeick from Verl .
