William Henry "Bill" Lange (born January 12, 1928 in Delphos , Ohio , † April 5, 1995 in Bellefontaine , Ohio) was an American American football player . He played as a guard and linebacker in the National Football League (NFL) with the Los Angeles Rams , Baltimore Colts and the Chicago Cardinals .
Player career
Bill Lange visited in Lima , the High School and studied after his graduation from 1947 to 1949 at the University of Dayton . For their football team , the "Dayton Flyers" , he ran as an offensive tackle . In 1949, Lange was elected to the Ohio state election .
In 1950, Bill Long was by the Los Angeles Rams in the 30th round of the 389th spot drafted . The following year he joined the team trained by Joe Stydahar . Stydahar used him in defense as a linebacker and in the offense as a guard to protect the quarterbacks Bob Waterfield and Norm Van Brocklin . In his rookie year , his team won eight of twelve games in the regular season , which brought them into the NFL final. Opponent in the final was the reigning champions - the Cleveland Browns trained by Paul Brown . The defense of the Rams around Lange and defensive end Andy Robustelli managed to keep the opposing star running back Marion Motley under control. With a 24:17 victory, the Rams won the NFL championship . In 1952, the Rams won nine out of twelve games. With this result they could move into the play-offs . Opponents in the play-off game were the Detroit Lions . Although the defense of the Rams could force the quarterback of the Lions Bobby Layne to make mistakes - he threw a total of four interceptions , coach Buddy Parker's team won 31:21 against the team from Los Angeles .
After the 1952 season, Lange was transferred to the Baltimore Colts. The newly formed team was unsuccessful in its first season. After a year of play in Baltimore , Lange was passed on to the Chicago Cardinals in exchange for another player. After the 1955 season, Lange ended his playing career. After his career, Bill Lange worked in a shipping company .
Honors
Bill Lange was voted All-Pro in 1953 . In 1976 he was inducted into the University of Dayton Athletic Hall of Fame .
