Bellefontaine is a city and the administrative seat of Logan County , Ohio , United States . The population was 13,069 at the 2000 census. Bellefontaine is administered by an elected mayor with an elected city council.
The highest point in Ohio, Campbell Hill , is within the city limits of Bellefontaine.
geography
Bellefontaine is at the intersection of US Highway 68 with Ohio State Route 47 and Ohio State Route 540 . US Highway 33, which is similar to a freeway, runs past the northern edge of the city. The Bellefontaine Regional Airport is located about eight kilometers from the center and replaced the Bellefontaine Municipal Airport in 2002 .
According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 22.7 km², including no significant body of water.
history
The name Bellefontaine is borrowed from French and refers to the numerous sources in the area.
Blue Jacket's Town
Around 1777 Shawnee settled here under the leadership of Blue Jacket (Weyapiersenwah). They previously lived in a village on the Scioto River , but when the American Revolutionary War encroached on the Ohio Country , Blue Jacket and other Indians moved their whereabouts closer to their allies' base in Detroit . This settlement was known as Blue Jacket's Town and was destroyed in Logan's Raid . This raid by militias from Kentucky took place in 1786 at the beginning of the Northwest Indian War under the leadership of Benjamin Logan , the namesake for Logan County. Blue Jacket and his followers continued northwest on the Maumee River .
War veterans and Virginia settlers eventually settled here at the beginning of the 19th century . Bellefontaine is roughly on the border of the Virginia Military District , but the Treaty of Greenville , which separated American land from Native American populations, has been poorly implemented in that area.
Railways
The city was officially founded in 1820. The Mad River and Lake Erie Railroad built the first railway line in Bellefontaine in 1837. This was the beginning of the history of the railway in Bellefontaine, which peaked after the 1890s when the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad ( Big Four Railroad ) built one of their main depots here, the roundhouse of which was then the largest between New York City and Saint Louis was in Missouri.
Even after the decline of rail traffic in the second half of the 20th century and the closure of the Big Four station in 1983, Bellefontaine remained an important hub on the map of North American railroads, as this is where the routes from CSX Transportation to Cleveland , Indianapolis and Crossing Dayton .
Road traffic
In 1891, the first concrete road in the United States was built at Bellefontaine . George Bartholomew had developed a method of pouring pavement using Portland cement. A short stretch of Main Street on the west side of the Logan County Courthouse was the first stretch of road to be built in this way, and after the new practice proved its worth, Court Avenue was also paved. Main Street is now paved with asphalt, Court Avenue has been paved with concrete more than a century ago.
Honda opened a plant in neighboring Marysville in 1979 , which has since expanded several times. In 2009 the site is surrounded by Honda's operations in Marysville, East Liberty , Russell's Point , Anna and Troy . Honda is therefore the largest employer for Bellefontaine and the surrounding area.
Campbell Hill and Military Base
European settlers first referred to Campbell Hill as Hogue's Hill, possibly a misspelling of the name of Solomon Rogue who owned the land in 1830. In 1898 the site came into the ownership of Charles D. Campbell, who later sold it to August Wagner, the actual master brewer of the Augustiner and Gambrinus beer brands .
The Wagner family provided 1,950 Campbell Hill and the surrounding 57.5 acres (about 23 hectares ) of the Federal Government of the United States . This stationed the 664th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron here in 1951 . The unit was responsible during the Cold War for monitoring the airspace for possible attacks by the Soviet Union . The station and similar units were eventually replaced by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the Bellefontaine base closed in 1969.
A school was established on the mountain in 1974, the Ohio Hi-Point Career Center .
Holland Theater
The Holland Theater is a former theater from the 1930s that was later converted into a cinema and closed in 1998. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has seen new uses for cultural events in recent years.
Attractions
The City of Bellefontaine states that McKinley Street, just six meters long, is the shortest street in the United States. A notice board on the road indicates that it is the shortest street in the world, but Ebenezer Place in Wick , Scotland has held this record since November 2006 .
Other attractions include the house where Edward D. Jones started his business and the United Methodist Church , where Rev Norman Vincent Peale started his career.
Demographics
At the time of the United States Census 2000, Bellefontaine was inhabited by 13,069 people. The population density was 576.0 people per km ². There were 5722 housing units at an average of 252.2 per km ². Bellefontaine’s population was 90.82% White , 5.13% Black or African American , 0.15% Native American , 0.93% Asian , 0.04% Pacific Islander , 0.53% said other races belong to and 2.40% mentioned two or more races. 1.12% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Bellefontaine distributed to 5319 households out of which 34.1% were living in children under 18 years. 45.7% of households were married, 14.4% had a female head of household without a husband and 35.4% were not families. 30.5% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 11.9% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.01.
The population was divided into 28.1% minors, 10.0% 18–24 year olds, 29.1% 25–44 year olds, 19.9% 45–64 year olds and 12.9% aged 65 years or more. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 women there were 90.9 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 86.4 men.
The median household income in Bellefontaine was 36,029 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 42,126 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 34,637, compared with $ 22,849 for women. The per capita income was $ 17,781. 12.9% of the population and 14.6% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 20.7% of minors and 7.0% of those aged 65 and over.
