Location and traffic
Gangshan District is to the west of Kaohsiung and has eight neighboring districts: Luzhu and Alian Districts in the north, Tianliao and Yanchao in the east, Qiaotou and Ziguan in the south, and Yong'an and Mituo in the west. There are two mountains in the district, the Great Gangshan (Chinese: 大 岡山 Da Gangshan) and the Little Gangshan (小 岡山 Xiao Gangshan), from them the place takes its name. The Agongdian River flows through Gangshan . Gangshan is connected to the highway, the Taiwanese railway network and, since the end of 2012, also to the Kaohsiung subway network.
history
Gangshan's former name was Agongdian , which means "old man's shop" and is said to go back to the business of an old merchant on the Kaohsiung highway to the north, where he sold provisions to travelers. The place grew during the Qing Dynasty thanks to its proximity to Kaohsiung Harbor and its location on the highway to the north. During the Japanese rule of Taiwan , the place was renamed Gangshan in 1920 . Towards the end of the colonial period and from the middle of the 20th century, a large number of metalworking companies settled in Gangshan, benefiting from the proximity to the harbor, which still shape the economy of the district today. During the Second World War , the Japanese built a military airfield in Gangshan . During the war, Gangshan was the target of heavy Allied air strikes because of its military and economic importance. After the war, the military airfield was taken over by the Air Forces of the Republic of China and the place experienced a new economic boom. In 2010, Gangshan was incorporated into Kaohsiung City along with Kaohsiung County .
meaning
Since industrialization in the 20th century, Gangshan has been one of the most important industrial areas in Taiwan, with the metal industry at the top. The main products of the region are screws and other products in the field of fastening technology , which are exported abroad on a large scale. Gangshan is also an important location for the Taiwanese Air Force, which has a military airfield, an academy and a museum here.
