Yancheng is one of the oldest districts of Kaohsiung and, together with neighboring Qijin, represents the nucleus of the city. Chinese and Japanese fishermen fished here as early as the 17th century, and permanent settlement by Chinese settlers began during the time of the Dongning Kingdom (1661–1683) . In addition to fishing, salt production became the most important branch of the economy, which is where the district's name (literally "Salt Square") comes from. The location at the port and at the mouth of the Liebes River enabled it to develop into a flourishing commercial and economic district. Hotels, bars and restaurants have settled in the traditional harbor district. During the Japanese rule , the city administration was moved to Yancheng, which also became the administrative center of the city. In the 1960s, Yancheng was the most populous district in the Kaohsiungs. With the loss of importance of fishing and the rise of modern shipbuilding in other districts around the port, the economic importance of Yancheng declined in the last third of the 20th century, which was also reflected in a declining population. Buildings steeped in history were abandoned and fell into disrepair. In contrast, the district has grown in importance in the tourist and cultural sector since the 1990s. The main attractions here are the Love River and the nearby Love Pier , which is now mainly used by tourist ships. More recently, the city government has also tried to promote Yancheng. The City Concert Hall (2000), the International Congress Center (2000), the Kaohsiung Film Archive and the Art Center Pier 2 (2002) were built here. The building, built by the Japanese in 1938 and used as the seat of the city administration until 1992, was opened in 1998 as the Kaohsiung City History Museum after renovation .
