Shanlin ( Chinese  杉林 區 , Pinyin Shānlín Qū ) is a municipality of Kaohsiung in the Republic of China (Taiwan) .

Location description

Shanlin is located in the northeast of the urban area of ​​Kaohsiung and borders the urban area of Tainan . The neighboring boroughs are Jiaxian in the north, Liugui in the east, Meinong in the south and south-east, Qishan and Neimen , and a short section of the Tainan borough of Nanhua in the west. The small river Nanzixian ( 楠梓仙溪 , Nánzǐxiān Xī ) or Qishan ( 旗山溪 , Qíshān Xī ) flows through Shanlin from north to south and in the southern section forms the border to the neighboring district of Qishan for about 7 km.

history

During the Qing period the place was named Nanzixian ( 楠梓 仙 , Nánzǐxiān ). In 1901, six years after the annexation of Taiwan by Japan , he was given the name Shanlin ( 杉林 , Japanese Sugibayashi , ' fir forest '). From 1920 Shanlin was a 'village' ( , Zhuāng ) in Takao Prefecture . After the island of Taiwan was taken over by the Republic of China in 1945, the prefecture of Kaohsiung and Shanlin became a 'rural community' ( , Xiāng ). On December 25, 2010, the county was incorporated into Kaohsiung City and Shanlin became a municipality ( , ) of Kaohsiung.

At the end of 2017, 61 people belonged to the indigenous peoples of Taiwan (approx. 0.4%). Hakka's share was around 60%.

The economy is shaped by agriculture. A nationally known product are papayas .

traffic

Provincial road 29 runs largely parallel to the course of the Nanzixian from north to south, turns south to west in the direction of Beimen and crosses the river valley. Before that, the district road 181 branches off, which leads further south.

Landmarks, tourism

The Yuemei Bridge ( 月眉 橋 , Yuèméi qiáo ), a 230 m long bridge over the Nanzixian Valley , built in 1935 during the Japanese era, was the longest reinforced concrete bridge in Southeast Asia in its time. The Baishuiquan waterfall ( 白水 泉 瀑布 , Báishuǐquán pùbù , ) was created through hydraulic engineering measures to avoid flooding of the settlements and to channel the water from the mountains directly into the Nanzixian .
