Sanmin ( Chinese : 三民 區 , Pinyin Sānmín Qū ) is a district in Kaohsiung City in Taiwan in the Republic of China .
The 19.7866 km² district is located in the central city area of Kaohsiung, surrounded by the districts of Gushan , Zuoying , Renwu , Niaosong , Fengshan , Lingya , Xinxing , Yancheng and Qianjin . At the end of February 2013, Sanmin was the district with the second largest population in Kaohsiung with a population of 349,685.
In the 17th century, three clans of Chinese immigrants from Fujian founded a village called 三塊 厝 ( Taiwanese : Saⁿ-tè-chhù , "three farmsteads") in the western part of today's district . The name was retained over the centuries and during the Japanese rule over Taiwan . After Taiwan was handed over to the Republic of China, the district was expanded and in 1957 renamed Sun Yat-sens (Chinese: 三民主義Sanmin zhuyi ) to Sanmin based on the “ Three People's Principles ” .
Sanmin is one of the most important transportation hubs in Kaohsiung. Kaohsiung Central Station, which is also connected to the Kaohsiung subway network, is located in the district. In addition, the district is crossed by Highway 1 (which is called Minzu Road in the urban area ) in a north-south direction, and there is an access road to Highway No. 1.
In Sanmin are three universities: the Medical University of Kaohsiung , the University of Applied Science and Technology Kaohsiung and Ursulinische Wenzao-Foreign Studies University .
The love river flows through the district , surrounded on both sides by walking and cycling paths. Other attractions include the Science and Technology Museum , Sanfeng Gong Temple, and Jinshi Lake .
