Shuishang

Shuishang ( Chinese  水上鄉  /  水上乡 , Pinyin Shuǐshàng Xiang ) is a rural municipality ( , Xiang ) in Chiayi County the Republic of China on Taiwan .

location

Shuishang is roughly in the geographical center of the Chiayi district, south of the city of Chiayi . The northern tropic (Tropic of Cancer, by definition the northern boundary of the tropics ) runs through the municipality. The maximum east-west extension is around 14.3 kilometers and the north-south extension varies between 2 and 6.5 kilometers. Shuishang consists mainly of lowlands that belong to the Jianan Plain . In the east it turns into hill country. In the southwest, the river Bazhang (or Bazhangxi , 八掌溪 , Bāzhǎng Xī ) forms the municipal boundary over about 4 kilometers.

history

An earlier name of Shuishang is Shuikutou 水 堀 頭 , Shuǐkū tóu , which roughly means "at the end of the waterhole". During the reign of Kangxi , the first Han Chinese immigrated from Heping County in Guangdong Province . During the time of the Japanese rule in Taiwan (1895-1945) several administrative reforms took place and in 1920 Shuishang was reorganized as a 'village' ( , Zhuāng ). After Taiwan was taken over by the Republic of China in 1945, the 'rural community' ( , Xiāng ) Shuishang was formed from it on January 20, 1946 , but it was dissolved again and incorporated into the city of Chiayi on June 6, 1946. From October 25, 1950, Shuishang belonged again as a rural community to the newly formed district of Chiayi . In the period that followed, the villages were reorganized several times. As of December 12, 1952, Shuishang had 27 villages, as of January 1, 1978, 23, and since June 1, 1986, 26 villages.

population

With just over 49,000 inhabitants, Shuishang ranked second among the 18 parishes in Chiayi County in 2020. At the end of 2017, 235 people (0.5%) belonged to the indigenous peoples .

Agriculture

Of the approximately 69 km² community area, about 41 km² are used for agriculture. In the western, more water-rich section of Shuishang, rice cultivation dominates, as well as the culture of cantaloup melons , watermelons , potatoes , radishes , spinach , vegetable cabbage and Chinese mustard . In the drier eastern hill country, which begins a little east of the national road 3 , fruit growing predominates ( oranges , papayas , bananas , dragon fruits ), there are also special crops such as lotus seeds and Platostoma palustre (from which grass jelly is made). The animal husbandry consists mainly of pig, dairy cattle, sheep and poultry breeding.

traffic

Chiayi Airport is located in Shuishang , but its importance as a domestic airport has declined significantly since the opening of the high-speed rail link (THSR). Shuishang is crossed by two highways in a north-south direction - on the one hand National Road 1 , which runs past the urban area of Chiayi to the west, and on the other hand, National Road 3 , which runs past Chiayi to the east. Coming from Chiayi, Provincial Road 3 runs southwest through Shuishang. The Taiwanese Railroad runs parallel to it and has two stations in Shuishang: Nanjing and Shuishang. To the west of Shuishang lies the route of the Taiwanese high-speed railroad . The most important road connection in the east-west direction is the provincial expressway 82, which also connects the two motorways.

particularities

Shuishang's most famous attraction is the Tropic of Cancer Monument ( 嘉義 北回歸線 標誌 , Jiāyì Běi Huíguīxiàn Biāozhì , ), which was completed in its current form in 1995. Before that, five other, much smaller monuments had been erected in the area in succession since 1908. The 3.5 km long Jiayou cycle path ( 嘉 油 鐵馬 道 , Jiā yóu tiěmǎ dào ) leads along the route of the former narrow-gauge railway of the China Petroleum Company through varied surroundings to Chiayi.
