history

During the time of Japanese rule (1895-1945), an administrative reform in 1920 essentially created the administrative units that still exist today. Lucao became a 'village' ( , Zhuāng ) in Dongshi District, Tainan Prefecture . After the Republic of China took over Taiwan at the end of World War II, the village became a 'rural community' ( , Xiang ) on January 18, 1946 and the prefecture became Tainan County . The district level was abolished in 1950 and the new districts of Chiayi and Yunlin were separated from Tainan County . Lucao was then a rural community in Chiayi County.

On August 1, 1959, a small area correction took place and the village of Meipu ( 梅 埔村 ) moved from Lucao to neighboring Taibao.

population

The population consists mainly of Hoklo . At the end of 2019, 38 members of indigenous peoples lived in Luacao, corresponding to a population share of 0.2%.

particularities

The Zhongliao Anxi City God Temple ( 中寮 城隍廟 , Zhōngliáo ānxī chénghuáng miào ) is a small temple from the late reign of Qianlong in Chongliao village. The temple, which was founded by immigrants from Anxi ( Fujian Province ), has undergone many later renovations. The Yuci Yegong Temple ( 余 慈 爺 公廟 , Yúcí yégōng miào ) is a small, barely 20 m² area and relatively inconspicuous temple, which is located in the village of Houliao, near the flyover of the high-speed railroad over the county road 167. Yuci ( 余 慈 ), a military commander of Zheng Chenggong , who later died a violent death, is venerated in the temple . The current temple was built in 1970. Every year on the 23rd day of the fourth lunar month, numerous believers arrive and build their show booths along County Road 167, where puppet shows and other religious performances are held in honor of the deity.
