location
Xikou is located in the northwest of Chiayi County in the Jianan Plain , about five kilometers north of the city limits of Chiayi . The northern boundary is formed in a small north-western section of the Beigang ( Beigangxi ) river and the eastern boundary is formed by the two brooks Huaxingxi ( 華興 溪 , Huáxìng xī ) and Sandiexi ( 三疊 溪 , Sāndié xī ). The neighboring communities are Xingang in the west, Minxiong in the south, Dalin in the east, and in Yunlin County Yuanchang and Dapi in the north. history
The first Han Chinese settlers came to the Xikou area from the southern Chinese provinces of Guangdong and Fujian in the early 17th century . The old Chinese name of Xikou was Shuangxikou ( 雙 溪口 - "confluence of the two streams"). The name refers to the local confluence of the two streams Huaxingxi and Sandiexi . At the time of the Japanese colonial rule in Taiwan (1895-1945) it became the village Xikou ( 溪口 庄 , Xīkǒu zhuāng ) in 1920 . After the Republic of China took over Taiwan , the 'village' became the 'rural community' ( 鄉 , Xiang ) Xikou, which was part of the newly established Chiayi County from 1950.
population
The vast majority of the population are Hoklo ( Minnan speakers). Members of indigenous peoples make up only a very small proportion (33 people at the end of 2019, 0.2%).
