Dalin

Dalin ( Chinese  大 林鎮  /  大 林镇 , Pinyin Dàlín Zhèn ) is a township ( 鎮 , Zhèn ) in the Chiayi District of the Republic of China in Taiwan .

location

Dalin is located in the north of Chiayi County in the Jianan Plain , about 7 kilometers from the city limits of Chiayi . The neighboring parishes in Chiayi County are Xikou in the west, Minxiong in the south, and Meishan in the east. In Yunlin County , Dapi and Dounan border in the north and Gukeng in the northeast. The terrain is mostly flat and turns into hill country in the east (about east of National Road 3 ).

history

An earlier name of Dalin is Dapulin or Dabulin ( 大 莆 林 / 大埔 林 , Dàpúlín, Dàbùlín  - "Forest of Dapu / Dabu"). The settlement of the area by Han Chinese immigrants from Guangdong and Fujian began during the reign of Kangxi . During the Lin Shuangwen uprising against the Qing rule from 1787–1788, the battle of Dabulin ( 大埔 林 之 戰 ) took place here. During the Japanese colonial rule (1895-1945), Dalin was organized into a 'village' on October 1, 1920 ( 大林 庄 , Dàlín zhuāng ). On October 1, 1943, the 'village' received the status of a 'street' ( 街 ) or urban settlement. After the takeover of Taiwan by the Republic of China it was on 20 January 1946, the township ( 鎮 , Zhen ) Dalin, first in Tainan County and from 25 October 1950 the newly established Chiayi County.

In recent times Dalin's homophony to the English darling is often used for marketing purposes.

population

The vast majority of the population are Hoklo ( Minnan speakers). Members of indigenous peoples make up only a very small proportion (136 people at the end of 2019, 0.4%).

Agriculture

Dalin is used extensively for agriculture because it has fertile soils, favorable topography (largely flat land) and abundant water resources. The main products of agriculture are rice, bamboo shoots, oranges and pineapples. Orchid cultivation ( Phalaenopsis ) also plays a role.

traffic

Dalin is an important station for transit traffic towards Chiayi further south. In the west, the national road 1 (motorway) runs in a north-south direction through Dalin. In the east, the national road 3 (motorway) crosses Dalin in a south-westerly direction. Provincial road 1 also runs more in the center in a north-south direction. The main east-west link is County Road 162 from Xikou to Meishan. The longitudinal line ( 縱貫 線 ) of the Taiwanese Railway has a station in Dalin.

Higher educational institutions

Dalin is the location of the private Nanhua University ( 南華 大學 , ) founded in 1996 , which has its campus in the district of Zhongkeng. The monk Hsing Yun of the Buddhist Fo Guang Shan order is considered to be the university's founder.

particularities

For several years now, the municipal administration has been trying to develop Dalin into a place of recreation and ecotourism. For this purpose, beautification and nature conservation measures were carried out. Dalin joined the Cittàslow network on February 8, 2016 .

The old sugar factory ( 大林 糖廠 ) in the Datang district from 1914, which was in operation until 1996, gives an insight into the time when the sugar industry played a central role in Taiwan. On the Dalin Cycle Path ( 大林 線 自行車 道 ) you can cycle from the sugar factory through Datang, Hubei, Sancun and Sanjaio and from there on to Zhuqi train station . The bike path runs partly along the Alishan Forest Railway .

Two temples that are considered worth seeing are the Longtian Temple ( 隆 天宮 , Lóngtiān gōng ) in the district of Yihe and the Buddhist Zhaoqing Zen Temple ( 昭慶 禪寺 , Zhāoqìng chán sì ) in the district of Minghua.
