Fo Guang Shan ( Chinese  佛光 山  - "Buddha's Mountain of Light") is a Chinese - Buddhist order of the Mahayana tradition, which has achieved international fame. The order founds and directs temples and groups worldwide under his name.

The headquarters of Fo Guang Shan, near Kaohsiung (Taiwan), is the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan . Together with Tzu-Chi, the organization is one of the largest charities in Taiwan. It was founded in 1967 by Hsing Yun, a well-known Buddhist monk and scholar. The order developed and promoted humanistic Buddhism, a modern Buddhist philosophy that is currently very popular in Taiwan.

The aim of the order is to make Buddhism more widely known worldwide, but also to bring it into people's lives and hearts. The order is part of the Chan by Linji Yixuan justified Linji zong .

The headquarters in Kaohsiung

In 1967, Master Hsing Yun bought more than 30 hectares of land in Dashu Township in Kaohsiung County, about 20 km northeast of Kaohsiung , as a site to build a monastery. The dedication ceremony was held on May 16 of that year.

The monastery is overlooked by a 36-meter-high statue of Amitabha Buddha standing on the summit of Fo Guang Shan Mountain . On the monastery grounds there is also the "Path of a Thousand Buddhas", on which donated Buddha statues were set up. There are three large Buddha statues in the main hall: Amitabha, flanked by Mahasthamaprapta and Avalokitesvara . For large events on public holidays, the space in front of the main hall is also used to accommodate several thousand people.

The site was expanded to include the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum in 2011 .
