Linji Yixuan
Linji Yixuan ( Chinese 臨濟義玄 , Pinyin Linji Yixuan , W.-G. Linchi I-hsüan ;. Jap Rinzai Gigen; † 866 / 867 ) is the founder of the school named after him Linji Zong ( 臨濟宗 , Linji zōng , Lin-chi tsung ), of meditation Buddhism ( Chan ) in the Chinese Empire , which subsequently also gained a foothold in Korea , Japan and Vietnam . Best known is the Japanese Rinzai shū that a branch of the Japanese Zen - Buddhism represents.
As a young monk in the Huayan tradition, Linji was an avid student of Buddhist rules and scriptures. One day he was reported to have burned all of his written records to become a monk of the Chan School whose teachings were conveyed 'outside of the scriptures'. He became a student of Huángbò and his Dharma successor and got his name from the Linji Temple in Hebei , where he worked from 851, i.e. at the time of the great persecution of Buddhists (from 845). Some of his most important Dharma lectures, teachings and dialogues were passed on by his students in Linji Lu (Japanese Rinzai Roku).
