Meishan

Meishan ( Chinese  梅山鄉 , Pinyin Meishan Xiang ) is a rural municipality ( , Xiang ) in Chiayi County the Republic of China on Taiwan .

location

Meishan is located in the northeast corner of Chiayi County. The municipality has the shape of a lying rectangle with the edge lengths 6–8 km × 21.5 km. The height above sea level varies greatly from 90 m in the valleys to a maximum of 1825 m in the mountains. In the northwest, where the settlement density is highest, Meishan has a share of the Jianan plain and to the east the terrain becomes increasingly mountainous. Over a longer section, the small river Qingshui ( 清水溪 , Qīngshuǐ Xī ) forms the northeastern boundary of the municipality. The neighboring communities are Alishan in the east, Zhuqi in the south, Dalin and, in a very short section, Minxiong in the west, and Gukeng in Yunlin County in the north.

history

An older name of Meishan is Meizikeng ( 梅 仔 坑 ). During the Qing period, the area was administratively subordinate to Zuoluo County ( 諸 羅 縣 , Zhūluó xiàn ). During the time of the Japanese rule (1895-1945), the area was reorganized in 1920 as the village of Xiaomei ( 小 梅庄 , Xiǎoméi zhuāng ). After the Republic of China took over Taiwan in 1945, it became today's rural community of Meishan.

On March 17, 1906, the Meishan area was mainly affected by the Meishan earthquake (contemporary: Formosa earthquake or Kagi earthquake ), which claimed 1249 lives in all of Taiwan, making it the third-worst earthquake recorded in Taiwan.

population

At the end of 2017, 57 people (around 0.3%) belonged to the indigenous peoples.

traffic

The largest road is Provincial Road 3, which in the westernmost section of Meishan turns south in an arc when coming from the west. From here the county road 162A (162 甲) branches off, which runs in a sometimes very winding course through most of Meishan towards the east. In the east it branches off into the district roads 166 and 169. A little later, the district road 149A (149 甲) branches off from the latter.

tourism

Nature tourism plays a role. You can go around Meishan on the Min-Fan-Grenzdenkmal-Wanderweg ( 民 番 界碑 健行 路線 , Mín fān jièbēi jiànxíng lùxiàn ). The path leads past the monument of the same name ( ). A border pillar erected during the reign of Qianlong marked the border between the Han Chinese ( Min ) and the indigenous ( Fan ) settlement areas. There are several scenic areas ( 風景區 , Fēngjǐng qū ) in Taiping, Ruifeng, Taihe and Ruili. The small Meishan Yuxu Temple ( 梅山 玉虛宮 , Méishān yùxū gōng ) in the village of Meidong, which was built during the reign of Jiaqing in 1820, was destroyed in the above-mentioned Kagi earthquake in 1906 and then rebuilt, is worth seeing .
