Taibao ( Chinese 太保 市 , Pinyin Tàibǎo Shì , W.-G. T'ai-pao Shih ) is the capital of Chiayi County in the Republic of China on Taiwan .

Taibao is located immediately west of Chiayi in the Jianan Plain in southwestern Taiwan. The river Puzi flows along the northern city limits .
The Chiayi station of the Taiwan High Speed Rail is located in Taibao. Highway 1 Taipei - Kaohsiung crosses the city area.
history
From 1950 to 1982, Chiayi City was the capital of Chiayi County, and Taibao had the status of a rural parish ( 鄉 , Xiāng ). In July 1982 Chiayi received the status of an independent city and was spun off from the district. The county government was moved to Taibao, which was given city ( 市 , Shì ) status in July 1991 as the last county capital of Taiwan Province . In September 2014, Taibao was the smallest of all 23 places in the Republic of China with city status with around 37,000 inhabitants .
