Liujiao

Liujiao ( Chinese  六腳鄉  /  六脚乡 , Pinyin Liùjiǎo Xiang , Tongyong Pinyin Liòujiǎo Siang ), also Lioujiao is a rural municipality ( , Xiang ) in Chiayi County the Republic of China on Taiwan .

location

Liujiao is located in the northwest of Chiayi County on the Jianan Plain . The northern boundary is essentially the Beigang (Beigangxi) river. The neighboring communities are Chiayi Dongshi County in the west, Puzi in the south, Taibao in the southeast, and Xingang in the northeast. Shuilin and Beigang parishes are adjacent in northern Yunlin County . The distance to the coast is about 10.5 kilometers and the average height above sea level is 8 meters.

history

According to tradition, six farming families from Longxi County ( 龍溪 縣  /  龙溪 县 , now part of Longhai in the Zhangzhou City area ) in Fujian Province immigrated to the Liujiao area during the reign of Qianlong and began to cultivate the land . The place was named 六家 佃 庄 (Taiwanese La̍k-ka-tiān-tsng , "village of the six tenant families", Hanyu Pinyin : Liujiadian Zhuang ). Since the pronunciation of (ka) in Taiwanese is similar to (ka), the spelling was later changed to 六 腳 佃 庄 with the new meaning "village of the six-footed tenants". The incorrect transliteration became established as a place name over time. During the time of Japanese rule in Taiwan (1895-1945), the neighboring village of Wannei ( 灣 內 ) was annexed in 1920 and the place - with the place name shortened by the character - as 'Village Liujia' ( Chinese 六 腳 庄 , Pinyin Liujiao Zhuang  - "six-foot village") reorganized. In 1945 Taiwan came to the Republic of China . From January 18, 1946, Liujia was a 'rural community' ( , Xiang ) in Tainan County and from October 25, 1950 in the newly formed Chiayi County.

population

The vast majority of the population are Hoklo ( Minnan speakers). Members of indigenous peoples make up only a very small percentage (50 people at the end of 2019, 0.2%).

The Jhecheng Cultural Park was set up in 2006 on the site of the former Suantou sugar factory ( 蒜頭 糖廠 , Suàntóu táng chǎng , ) that went into operation in 1903 . Visitors can gain an insight into Taiwan's former sugar industry. A narrow-gauge sugar railway is in operation on the site . The tomb of the Qing general Wang De-Lu ( 王 Grab 祿 , Wángdélù , † 1841; ) in the far northeast in the district of Lunyang crosses the Beigang tourist bridge ( 北港 觀光 大橋 , Běigǎng guānguāng dàqiáo ) on the border of the villages of Shuanghan and Anhe to the neighboring municipality of Beigang.
