List of cities in the Republic of China
The list of cities in the Republic of China provides an overview of the population of the cities of the East Asian state of the Republic of China (Taiwan) on the island of Taiwan .
Cities in the Republic of China
There are three types of cities in the Republic of China: urban cities ( Chinese 直轄市 ), independent cities, and county towns (the latter both: Chinese 市 ). In the past, the sub-government cities were on the same level as Taiwan Province in the administrative hierarchy, while the independent cities were lower. Since the province was greatly reduced as an administrative level at the end of the 1990s, there are only minor differences between the two. District towns (former designation: 省 轄市 , "provincial town"), on the other hand, are subject to the respective government of the district to which they belong.
With the administrative reorganization of December 2010, the former Taipei County became New Taipei City , making it the largest city in Taiwan. 69% of the 23.3 million Taiwanese live in the six largest cities, which are directly subordinate to the central government, of whom over 6.6 million people live in the Taipei / New Taipei agglomeration alone.
